About A.G. Kirkham:
I was born in a small town in Italy. My parents are loving people; and true traditionalists. I grew up being a chatterbox of a child and evolved into a quiet and shy teenager. I was definitely not the life of the party. As a matter of fact, I never wanted to go to any high school dances or any activities the school offered. I was good with being alone. I had to grow into my own and I eventually became the fun loving, open-minded and creative person I am now. I love the ‘me’ I have become and I am grateful that this is where I have landed.
Writing is my release and I have escaped in my imagination to some incredible places meeting the most awesome characters. I also wanted to be a rock star but anyone who has ever heard me sing kindly convinced me that I do not have any talent. (In other words, I suck at it.)
GUARD is the first book in a seven book series. In 2019 WAR (Book 2 in the series) has been launched. Each book introduces characters who you will learn about in the next series.
What inspires you to write?
Love is pure. We see this in our families and children. When two people come together and connect on a level that only they understand, I am riveted. Being part of creating two souls that fully embrace one another despite the situations and emotional turmoil they have faced, excites me. I write about finding inner strength, belief and trust.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
I have always loved romance and romance has a varied set of heroes and heroines. Some of my favourite authors are Kristen Ashley (Motorcycle Man), Maya Banks (Slow Burn), Pepper Winter and Cora Reilly (Twisted Series). All diverse types of loves. They capture love so differently and yet so poetically. I truly feel that I do the same and aspire to bring this to my own books.
Tell us about your writing process.
As the plot develops, I write out the important highlights I want to focus on. I carry a pad and pen with me everywhere because you never know when a new twist might pop into my head. Once I have the outline and the highlights I weave my story. A laptop, coffee, music and me!
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
All the time. Many times, I am arguing with them on why they are behaving so badly. My bad boys can be a real handful. I have even stopped writing on occasion because I needed to find a way to communicate with them again.
What advice would you give other writers?
Understand yourself. Know what makes you unique in your writing style and understand that you may have limitations. Find those amazing people to assist you through the harder areas and be open to criticism.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to self-publish. I find the method of publishing through a publisher tedious. I want my story to be told and not forced into a direction I am not 100% happy with. I also just want to get my books out to the public as quickly as I can.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe that more and more authors are self-publishing and are excited to promote their books. I also think that finding a great medium to promote is the key.
