Her Untamed Soul by Mandira Mazumder
My book is about the life journey of a free-spirited and intelligent small-town girl who grows up into an empowered woman through various phases she goes through. The first book is about her intriguing and adventurous childhood & adolescence when she romances with her class friend from her engineering college. Latha has grown up in a class-divided and rigid society. But she defies the “love laws” that bind her. She fights for her right to choose her lover, and they passionately love each other. All hell breaks loose as the family spies inform her father. She is kept under house arrest and the parents stop her education.
All exit points are blocked. The first book tells us if the persecuted girl will find her way out to her independence.
The Book2 is about her insane struggle with the entire society and her criminal father who is politically powerful. On the one hand, the police are on their trail and the local goons, trying to find her hideout. Life becomes unbearably hard and challenging when Latha fights out her life’s battle to protect her love life. Her father takes appalling revenge and the world of the 22 years old girl burns to ashes.
Book 3 is about Latha’s story of rising from the ashes and fighting out a bigger challenge legally. It is a harsh world of crime and intrigues. The trajectory of the protagonist’s life completely changes as she learns, gradually, to survive and discover her happiness. She rediscovers love in a much greater way. Would she find her joy and redemption from her existential crisis as a woman?

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Years back I saw a special BBC report on Crime against Women in South East Asia. Among the many victims of crime, one particular woman, among the brave and the bold protesters, drew my attention. Her face haunted my memory. She incubated in my mind and slowly formed as a full-fledged intriguing character until the pandemic broke out. The inspiration poured out in my novel.
I created the character with real passion.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Being a pre-university teacher for the past 25 years, I am very close to the new generation of young adults of India who find themselves alienated from their older generation who live by strict rules and fixed beliefs.
Besides, being a traveler across the country, especially in Southern India, I got exposed to their rich culture and heritage as to their conventional norms down the generation.
I observed upper-middle-class characters like Aadhi who are politically connected and can act violently if anything hampers their material ambition. I met women characters in both the upper and marginalized classes. Interestingly, the position of women in the family intrigued me. The older generation women have a status quo that they maintain in their patriarchal setup.
But the educated young generation, like Latha and Kiyash, is rebellious. They are always in conflict with their seniors because they seek independence and a democratic setup. This, particularly, refers to women who assert their voice. Things turn ugly and bloody violence follows as a result of flouting "love laws" and class- differences.

That night, Kiyash visited her in her dream. He looked so clean and fresh in a green shirt which used to be her favorite. “Latha, I am always there with you. Do not stop living. You are a powerful girl,” he seemed to say.
“Are you alive, Kiyash? Are you? They told me lies, then.” Latha was pleasantly surprised as his eyes twinkled. “Yes, they told you lies, Latha. I can see you,” Kiyash whispered.
His vanilla smell intoxicated her. She wanted to hug him, but he eluded her. “Why cannot I feel you, boy?”
Kiyash receded, saying, “You will find me there in your soul, Latha. She groaned in her sleep.
When Revathi awakened her, Latha held her hand and cried inconsolably.
“Revathi, I saw him just now. But he left me alone.”
