Demon serial killers, evil toddlers, handsome dead guys. Not to mention the PTA. Lydia Trinket has a few challenges, but she’s got it all (mostly) under control. Until she goes to banish an evil spirit, and he banishes her instead.
Then Lydia is trapped in a netherworld with all the ghosts she’s sent there, and it turns out that resting in peace isn’t really a thing. Hunted, defenseless, and surrounded by enemies, her goal is simple: live long enough to get out.
Sometimes simple does not equal easy. This time it’s not even close.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I woke up one morning with the idea of the canteen and the character of Lydia almost fully formed in my head. I was writing something else at the time (that I still haven’t finished) but Lydia just kind of wouldn’t shut up, and for a character to be that aggressive is very unusual for me. I love ghost stories and I loved the idea of juxtaposing horror and humor, so I ran with it.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Apart from Lydia, the rest of the characters were born in the outline, but they didn’t resemble their finished forms much then. My characters often don’t grow into their real personalities until some time around the second draft. When I first start writing, I’m just exploring and trying to find them.
About the Author:
Quite qualified to write about fear, at the age of forty-three Jen Rasmussen remains afraid of dark rooms, spiders, and Mrs. Danvers from Rebecca. She lives in Charlotte, North Carolina with her husband, daughter, and beagle (also a coward).
