How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
I call my books Paranormal Romance/Suspense, but there’s really only one paranormal element – my heroine can step into other people’s dreams (although at this point in the series, she still has little-to-no control over her ability). There’s a lot more focus on her everyday life, and I think that makes my books very relatable to readers.
I think that following my heroine through all the challenges that most of us face (school, work, family, etc) and combining/contrasting that with the paranormal aspect, makes these books unique.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
Keep writing, mainly. Nothing else really matters if you don’t do that. And understand that when your story or book is finished, your job isn’t done – it’s just started.
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
When I finished the first book in this series (Dream Student), I realized that I still had plenty of story to tell, and I’d left things set up very nicely for another book (the first book ends with our heroine planning to go to medical school, and about to be engaged to her boyfriend).
Those two things were perfect subjects to explore in another book – her life as a newlywed, at the same time that she’s in her first month of medical school. And, of course, just to make life a little more complicated, her supernatural dreams start up again, and she’s also got to figure out who’s trying to kill one of her teachers.
