What inspired you to write your book?
I was inspired to write this book by the love I have for my two senior German Shorthaired Pointers. As they get older, I wanted to be sure to capture the lessons they have taught me over the last 12 years. It is my love letter to them, my way of thanking them.
I knew I wanted to immortalize my two dogs and share them with the world. As a professional writer, this is the best way I knew how.
When I was just thinking of the idea of this book, it was a fun passion project, a “one day I should…” Then I started working on it, letting it take shape. I started talking to other people about it. I reached out to other authors and marketers. Then there was no stopping me. I got more and more excited about the book, and even today, everytime I see the cover, pick up a copy or look at it on Amazon, I smile. And that is complete proof that this is something I’m extremely proud of.

How do you see writing a book in the Pet Genre as different from writing other genres of books?
I am a business writer by profession, so much of what I write is dry and very straightforward. While I will always strive to incorporate the personality of the business or the client, it is still what it is – business stuff.
But writing in the pet genre really let me open up and write from my heart, with my emotions. It let me tell the sweet story of my dogs, their antics, activities, and their personalities. It let me write for them.
To date, it is by far my favorite piece of writing I’ve ever done.
Advice to someone that is thinking about or currently working on a pet book
Write with your heart. Pets occupy such huge pieces of our hearts and work their way into every aspect of our lives. There is nothing like sharing stories and ideas with other pet owners. Let the personality of your inspiration or muse come through in your writing. Don’t edit yourself, don’t hold back. Let your heart come through and others will love to read your story.
How did you decide how to publish your book and where is it published through:
I decided to self-publish this book, as I have done with my previous book (on Internet Marketing). To me it is the most logical choice in today’s connected Internet environment. It allow me to retain complete control over every aspect of my book, and remain within the budget I set for myself.
I worked with experts in each stage of the process – professional editors, professional proofreader (never forget that step), professional cover design, and a launch team to help with each step of the launch process. Turn to those who are excellent at each thing they do – don’t think you have to do it all yourself. Learn from other authors, join groups, get in on discussions and absorb everything you can so you can make an informed decision of what will work best for you.
I published through Amazon, that’s a no-brainer. Offering the book in electronic and paperback form is also a no-brainer and is no-risk these days thanks to things like Createspace. In the future I have plans to offer the book in audio form so I have one additional avenue to reach readers.
Author Bio:
I am an author, business writer, coach, speaker, and obsessive dog mom from northeast Ohio. There I share my life with my two German Shorthaired Pointers, Bimmer & Bertram, and my husband, Tom. I have been a business writer for over 20 years, covering every aspect of the field of business writing, from technical writing, to blogging, to white papers, to manuals, to ebooks, to books, and everything in between.
I am the owner of Annibury, LLC (Annibury.com), a full-service business writing company. When not focusing my attention on the Pointers – walking the Pointers, feeding the Pointers, playing with the Pointers, petting the Pointers, cleaning up after the Pointers, and generally meeting every conceivable need of the Pointers – I love being outdoors, reading, hanging out, or working on my latest award-winning needlework piece.
I’d love for you to become part of the Dogs Know Best Facebook community at facebook.com/groups/dogsknowbest. Here you’ll find the latest updates from Bimmer & Bertram and meet other canine teachers and their humans.
