It’s your typical Girl meets Boy. Except Girl is already engaged to someone else. And when Girl starts her very first teaching job she discovers Boy is actually one of her students. It was all impossible from the start.
And yet, Ashley keeps finding herself drawn to Ethan. Life keeps them on a collision course, forcing them to confront their feelings, their choices and their regrets over the span of years. Is it their fate to be together, or will bad timing and bad choices drive them apart for good?
Ashley has never quite known which path to take. She feels the pressure of the one everyone else wanted for her and the one that is risky and unknown, beckoning her with unrealised dreams. But she is stuck — stalled at every crossroad.
How can she choose the right path, when life seems to throw her a curve with every step?
In the space between choice and chance, fighting and giving in, Ashley must learn to find her own way, guided by the dreams — and the people — written on her heart.
Set over South Australia and Peru. And novel about life, love and forks in the road.
Targeted Age Group:: 18+
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
‘The Road Less Taken’ by Robert Frost. This poem is not just about taking the road less travelled, as it is so often thought to be, but it speaks to me of the way we only get one path in life. Once you’ve made a choice, your life goes in that direction. “Way leads on to way” and you can only wonder at how things would have turned out if you’d taken a different path.
I wanted to explore that idea. When is it too late to realise you want to make a different choice? Are some things meant to be, fated, or is it all down to us and the path we choose?
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
In my head at all times there are fragments of characters, personality traits and appearances that I pick up and store from the world around me. When I come to write a story, often a character will just present themselves, an amalgamation of the ideas in my head, and insist to be put in the driver’s seat.
That was the case with ‘Crossing Paths’. It sometimes feels like Ashley and Ethan chose me and wanted me to tell their story. I hope I did it justice. The other characters just seemed to grow organically out of the story and the roles I needed them to play in driving it forward and exploring the ideas in the book.
About the Author:
Jessica Copely lives with her husband and baby daughter in South Australia. Jessica is an indie author of Crossing Paths, her debut New Adult novel.
If she’s not writing, she’s probably thinking about writing. Or drinking chai tea, reading, daydreaming or thinking up her next adventure. She loves travel, snow and sewing; thinking quietly and laughing loudly; being alone in a crowd; anything with cream cheese icing on it.
