I was inspired by the Silver Age comics illustrations and pitched my idea to Okcate Smith and Tallulah Smith. Okcate Smith came up with the layout idea, and she digitized and designed the final product.
The amazing thing about this cover is that the main image (Bobcat, the buildings and the sky) are all hand drawn and hand colored by Tallulah–just like the vintage comic illustrations were. Okcate took her images and blended them with modern/futuristic digital banners. Okcate also designed and drew the “B” that is featured prominently in the novel.
The Astonishing Bobcat: Hero Worship is a superhero murder mystery and detective story. As such, the story delves into themes of discrimination, religious extremism, and the delicate balance of personal freedom and security, and the cover not only hearkens back to the Silver Age comics, but calls to mind the stained-glass windows that are prominent in many religious institutions.
