Tony Honkawa came up with the original concept from the book description of the character. But she had human eyes, which didn’t seem right to me. I wanted her to have bird eyes–owl eyes–because she sees so much in the darkness of her world. Once the eyes were in place, and the colors slightly tweaked, the cover was perfect.
