Most people see Keziah Black as just a deranged old woman but she wants revenge for an old injustice – and her family are going to pay.
Keziah is determined to take over the family business. Blackmail, subterfuge and rigging poker games? Anything goes…
Ex-fisherman Arthur Judd only came to Black Island for a fleeting visit but finds himself looking after a young daughter he’d never known existed.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I’ve written quite a few ‘serious’ books and with ‘Church of the White Rabbits’ I wanted to try something different.
The idea for the book was kicking around in my head for years – I’d visualised a remote island in the Atlantic, home to all sorts of eccentric characters, with a story based around family feuds and a mad old matriarch. I think my inspiration involved a bit of ‘Cold Comfort Farm’ and a couple of old TV shows – ‘Northern Exposure’ and ‘Two Thousand Acres of Sky’ (that’s a British one).
To begin with, I was uncertain about unleashing my sense of humour but I knew this wouldn’t be a story I could tell in the same way as my other books. My first readers seemed to like it, though… I just hope others do too.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
They emerge from my subconscious! They also take their own path – one of the main characters is Arthur Judd, an ex-fisherman who’s come home after a 15-year absence.
He was only meant to have a bit part but ended up taking over one of the biggest roles in the book. He had his own story. I just told it.
