What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
This may sound like common sense, but the two most important aspects of being a writer are reading and writing.
First, you must read, read, read. Read as many books as possible in your chosen genre. You will learn something from all of them, even the “bad” ones.
Then, you must write, write, write. Even if you’re not sure what you want to write about, start writing. Write a review of someone else’s book, or write a poem about whatever comes to mind, or write some notes that you may eventually turn into a short story or novel. If you’re new to writing, don’t worry at first about editing. You can edit later. The important thing is to learn how to tell a story and to let that story flow freely.
Once you’ve got a completed work in hand, you’ll have to look for advice on the business end of writing. You can find that advice elsewhere. The important thing, though, is to be a good writer. And to be a good writer, you must read and write.
Author Bio:
Treesong is an author, community organizer, talk radio host, and Real Life Superhero living in Southern Illinois. He grew up in the Chicagoland area and moved to Carbondale, Illinois to study philosophy at Southern Illinois University. Through his academic studies and activism, he became involved in the environmental movement, eventually changing his name to Treesong to reflect his newfound Earth-centered spirituality.
Ever since I learned how to read, I’ve been a big fan of reading. When I was in grade school, I started writing my own fiction. This book is inspired by my lifelong love of literature as well as my concern about various environmental and social justice concerns in the world today. Exploring these concerns through fiction is a good way to gain a fresh perspective while enjoying good storytelling.
