Synopsis of Before There Were Words: The Energetic Messages of Runes by Kriss Erickson
Introductio: The main focus of Before There Were Words: The Energetic Meaning of Runes is that by looking at the energetic messages contained in the Germanic Runes we can no only unlock the mysteries contained in the Runic symbols, but can derive deep wisdom and guidance from these unique divination tools.
Introduction also contains a brief history of the Runes, how and why the Germanic Runes were tied to God and Goddesses. Cross-referenced using many other works on Runes, with footnotes and bibliography. Discusses the usage of the Odin or Blank Rune and why I choose to use it.
Chapter one discusses the energetic/intuitive nature of Runes, which is the heart of Runic energy. Runic symbols are indicators of overall life energy. The concept of Heart Runes: a Rune or Runes that come up consistently for an individual that indicates a main life energy or focus.
Chapter two discusses several ways to cast Runes, putting emphasis on the individual’s intuitive preference rather than on a specific method. As with working with any divination tool, addressing the Runes with respect helps to open a channel between Rune caster, Runic energy and the Seeker, for clear and helpful information.
Chapter three is a brief list of what Runes are. For example, Runes are tools to help us develop intuitive senses. Runes are concerned with life cycles and energetic patterns.
Chapter four is a brief list of what Runes are not. For example, Runes are not predictive tools, since predictive tools tend to take away the individual choice, freewill and responsibility.
Chapter five discusses Runes and life cycles. The main concern of the Runes is the refining and healing of the self and the defining of personal life path and energy. Each Runic symbol is concerned with a major life theme such as manhood, womanhood, death, life, protection, health and defense, to name a few. This chapter helps the reader become more self-sufficient by pointing out the Runic focus of self-change. This chapter compares the Runes to the Tarot and other divination tools and gives examples of how to apply the thematic messages of Runes in everyday life.
Chapter six discusses the connection between Runes and Universal Laws. There is at least one Universal Law tied to each Rune, that reminds the Seeker of the reason for the present struggles and gives perspective for hope in relieving pressure or blockage in everyday life.
Chapter seven discusses the connection between the Runes and the Chakras. Since the Chakras are the energetic system of the human body, the energy of the Runes is closely tied to them. Each Rune is tied to one or more of the Chakras, which is indicated by the color frequency of the Rune itself. Since the Chakras are connected to sound frequencies, each of the Runes is also connected to one or more sound frequencies.
A detailed description of each of the seven main Chakras is included in this chapter, including which Runes correspond to which Chakras. This hcapter also includes information on how to include Chakra information in Rune casts and a powerful, original Chakra Rune Cast created by the author.
Chapter eight is a brief description on how to choose a set of Runes, with emphasis on using the intuition to guide the individual regarding whether to choose stones, wood or other materials, as well as ideas on making a personal set of Runes.
Chapter nine discusses how to read Runes. Five major steps are included, such as remembering to trust the energy of the Runes and looking for patterns within patterns.
Chapter ten discusses Rune polarities. Older sources have traditionally listed most Runes as having masculine energy, but further research and study as well as working with the Runes themselves has revealed that there is a balance between masculine, feminine and balanced (both masculine and feminine) energies. Each Rune is listed with its polarity and the reason I list it as such.
Chapter eleven focuses on the concept of Heart Runes, or Runes that come up to reveal major life themes. This knowledge can be illuminating for the Seeker as well as reassuring.
Chapter twelve contains sample Rune casts. All casts except the Runic Cross were created by the author. Included are: Using Runes as a pendulum, Three-Rune Cast, Five-Finger Rune Cast, Runic Cross and Rising Spirals Rune Cast. Sample casts with interpretations are also included.
Chapter thirteen contains Runic energetic interpretations. Each Rune is discussed extensively (one – two pages each) including overall meanings, Chakra connections, God/Goddesses associated with each Rune and their energetic values, energetic names for the Runes, elements (earth, water, fire, air, metal), polarity and Universal message. Graphics of each Rune Symbol, drawn by my husband, are also included.
Chapter fourteen discusses the meanings of Heart Runes, with the focus on an overall life energy thread and how that ties into everyday life and other Rune cast patterns.
Chapter fifteen discusses ways to find Runic messages in everyday life. Numerologists often encourage individuals to look for number patterns for insight. Shamans encourage us to notice what animals come into our lives each day. Runic messages can be found in similar ways.

Beofre There Were Words: Energetic Meanings of Runes, is an energetic interpretation of the Runes. While I paid respect to the traditional history and development of the reading of Runes, I also expanded on that firm foundation to show life path energy patterns, which is the heart of the Rune symbols themselves.

Keep writing. Write like yourself, not like anyone else.

Kriss Erickson is a versatile freelance writer who has had over 1,000 pieces published since she began writing professionally in 1981. She has often illustrated her work, and has provided photographs when needed.
Kriss had a cookbook, titled Healthy Gourmet Cheesecakes: Simple Recipes for Sensational Cheesecakes, published in January, 1998 by Avery Publishing. ISBN# 0-89529-783-3. In January of 2004, Kriss completed a series of children’s books titled Bug Buddies (pictured above), for San Min Publishers in Taiwan. I had worked with Runes for years, and the energy of the Runes themselves wanted to express itself in a more expanded way. The messages I received through the Runes were also deeper and more flowing, more energetic, than the traditional interpretations, making them potentially more useful for the recipients. To express all I had learned from the Runes themselves, a book needed to be written.
