What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Ever since I was a little girl I always wanted to write a fiction novel. I didn't know what it would be about or even how to start, but I knew I had it in me. Fast forward twenty plus years, and the idea of writing was still intriguing, but it seemed so far away, like a dream I couldn't quite grasp.
Then one day I got an email to attend a free webinar on self-publishing. Well, suffice it to say, that webinar changed my life. I suddenly had the framework for writing a novel, and I immediately got to work. To say the process was hard would be an understatement, but I persevered and now I can finally say I'm an author.
So what inspired me to write a book about shape-shifting dragons? I can sum that up into two words: my mom. She is the true dragon in the family. I grew-up with fantasy, dragons, faeries and mythical creatures all around me in books, bed time stories and movies. She was my inspiration, but my then twelve year-old son was my sounding-board. He helped me get my thoughts to paper from a truly basic brainstorming session to a full outline. He was simply amazing through the entire process.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Someone once told to "write what you know," so while my novel is fantasy fiction, the characters are very real. They are the people in my life or combinations thereof. Sachie is a braver version of my younger self, while Sean is a bit of my son and sister wrapped into one. Mateo is all my son, and Isabel is an amalgamation of my mom and sister. Sienna is me as an adult, while Marco is my fiancé. There's more, but yeah, the characters are my family, friends and acquaintances. I think that's what makes them feel so real. I based them all on people I know.
