The trade festival of Mascezad is normally a time of plenty for Horst and his trader uncle, but when they visit Highford Horst finds himself conscripted by the city’s mages. Unable to return to his own people and abandoned by his uncle, his fortunes go from bad to worse when he discovers that the city is being terrorised by a spate of murders, and the killer has a particular taste for dead mages…

How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
An apprentice mage as the protagonist is not new in itself, but Horst is substantially different from the typical ‘young man trying to find himself’. Prior to conscription by the mages he already had a life. He’s 20, he’s confident, he knows how to hunt and look after himself, and he really isn’t interested in learning to read or abiding by the softer rules of Highford.
There’s also a tendency in books with mortal danger to have major characters be immune to death, suffering only flesh wounds or the like. Because Bane of Souls focuses on murdering, I felt it was important that every character is potentially at risk. There’s a fairly high death toll, and it’s not just the redshirts who end up dead.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
Redraft and edit your work substantially. If you can, get some trusty beta readers to have a look at it, as fresh eyes and a new perspective can help a lot. E-books can be amended and edited post-release, but if you get a review lambasting the book for numerous typos or similar that’ll remain up and perhaps put readers off even if you correct them. Beta readers mean you get criticism whilst writing, enabling you to correct mistakes and avoid hearing about them (as much) in reviews.
Author Bio:
I’m Thaddeus White, and Bane of Souls is the first book I wrote (Journey to Altmortis occurs in the same world and includes several characters in Bane of Souls, whereas Sir Edric’s Temple is an entirely separate comedy).
Like Constantine the Great, I come from Yorkshire. I read fantasy and classical history mostly, as well as a bit of medieval history and the odd sci-fi.
Away from books, I like F1 (though I’m hoping the 2014 regulation changes lead to Vettel not winning all the time) and have offered tips on it since 2009, and enjoy videogames.
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I wanted to write a book in a high fantasy world that didn’t revolve around the possible end of the world, or ye olde ancient evil returning as foretold in the prophecy etc etc. The story’s about the terror a city feels when one or more murderers is on the loose, killing at will, almost like Jack the Ripper. At the same time, it tells of a young man (Horst) who is wrenched from the life he knows and forced into one he really doesn’t want.
