Her only choice seems to be to marry, relocate, and escape her past clandestine activities before someone discovers the truth.
When she hears about a matchmaker up north, the woman seems to be the answer to her prayers. She writes to her and begins
corresponding with a potential suitor. The quiet and serious Ezra Walters is a widower with a young daughter. He is immediately captivated by Anna’s intelligence and outgoing demeanor, sensing there’s more to her than meets the eye. However, he fears the dark truth about his late wife could drive her away.
As their connection deepens, Anna is torn between protecting her family’s reputation and the gnawing conviction to be completely honest with Ezra. She wrestles with whether she can trust him with the secrets she has never shared with anyone, a decision that could change the course of their relationship.
A mysterious figure from her past resurfaces, threatening to destroy her family and her new relationship. Working through the resulting fallout could spell disaster for their blossoming love or prove they can overcome anything.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I had the idea for a Civil War spy heroine for several years. I'd researched the topic pretty thoroughly and knew I'd use it one day.
When my friend Lisa invited me to be part of the Brides of Pelican Rapids series, I dusted off my character, named and modeled her after my late cousin, and brought Anna Heartfield to life.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I was talking to a web design client about different wars and we landed on the topic of the Civil War. I told him I'd been reading about the spy Elizabeth Van Lew. He sent me some books on the topic and I knew I wanted to write a heroine into one of my romances who was passing secrets to a Union officer.
In my original idea, she would get caught and imprisoned for her "crimes." However, The Brides of Pelican Rapids series is set during Reconstruction, so I had to change things up a bit and make it so Anna wasn't caught and she is now past the threat of it five years after the end of the war. Her conflict turned from that to trying to figure out how to start a new life so her family isn't uncovered for her part in bringing the South to its knees.
