Chapter 1
Understanding Dogs
We are fortunate to have dogs in our lives. We should be thankful we can have them live with us, especially in this day and age, when humans are largely disconnected from nature. Instead of connecting with
nature, we focus on artificial ways of satisfying the need to spend time outdoors.
Dogs can remind us of this important part of our lives, which is so often sacrificed for a metropolitan lifestyle. They can teach us to slow down, take it easy, and smell the roses—literally. Many people have
forgotten how to do this and need to learn to be patient, to relax, and to be one with nature.
Even as we try to take a more natural approach to what we eat and the way we live, we forget that dogs are naturally organic and can help us achieve a balanced state of mind and the lifestyle we seek. The
signs are right by our feet. We should take clues from our dogs, but we don’t.
We live in a fast-paced environment that is he opposite of a dog’s biological system. Dogs live shorter lives than humans; they are not consumed with the future. All they think about is now;
therefore, they are not living in a fast-evolving society. They live based on instincts, which tell them to live in a certain slow, simple way, the way nature intended. Nature takes time to evolve and regenerate. Dogs and animals follow nature’s path. They take their time.
They do not rush to work, for instance. They have all day to spend on their owner’s couch. Dog owners rush to work or other places, and in the
dog’s mind, humans are unbalanced because they are not relaxed.
Dogs remind us of the benefits of living at a slow pace, of living in the moment, but we pay no attention to them and the message
they are sending us. Dogs are constantly communicating to us, telling us to slow down. A few of my clients have gone through tough times in their lives, and the only way they could cope was to have a
dog.
