A Coat of Many Colors is an anthology of five plays. They all feature reality based, diverse Jewish characters ranging from Harry Houdini to the last queen of Tahiti. Shylock is there as well.
This anthology takes aim at the antisemitic stereotype. The Jewish characters in this book are distinct individuals. The only thing they share is the description, Jewish.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Of late antisemitism has escalated. In the U.S. the escalation has increasingly included violence. The basis for this age-old prejudice is the phrase, all Jews are alike, alike in terrible ways.
The irony here is that among members of the Jewish community, there is no general agreement on who is Jewish. Religious belief, family heritage, shared culture, and variations on all of these possibilities, are the "in-house" standards used. What is the old line? Where there are two Jews, there are three branches of the religion and four political parties.
This anthology is meant to illustrate that the internal Jewish disagreement is much closer to the real world than any negative stereotype.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
My educational background and my life-long interest is the study of biography. It is still what I most often read. It should not come as a surprise that the limitations for historical biography have not escaped me. Unless a biographer is dealing with a person who lived during the last century, there is no way to know with any certainty what their subject said.
These plays are an imaginative way of filling in that verbal blank space. Yet what I imagine the historical characters say is based on all the information I can find about them. For me, unless the play is a satire, the characters in the play need to reflect who they actually were.
