One of the narrator’s fictional characters, Detective Gladstone, has gained consciousness and stepped out of a novel into reality. He gradually adjusts to the real world with the narrator’s help, picking up insights along the way about what it means to be human. But an anti-illegal immigrant group does not want him in reality, and he must face down its leader to self-actualize as a real person.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I was inspired by the idea of a fictional character coming to life. The idea gave me a lot to work with, and I found myself easily coming up with scenes and adventures for my character to have. Additionally, the idea of my character's experience being similar to psychosis inspired me to explore how his actions could mirror that of a psychotic individual.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I came up with my characters by wondering about what might happen if a fictional character came to life. Making my protagonist a detective gave him a reason for his adventures in his fictional world, which contrasted with the apparent pointlessness of life in reality. I also came up with my narrator character by wanting to have a "creator" direct my protagonist and help him adapt to the real world.
