100 Nightmares by K.Z. Morano is a collection of 100 horror stories, each written in exactly 100 words, and accompanied by over 50 illustrations.
Inside, you’ll find monsters—both imagined and real. There are vengeful specters, characters with impaired psyches, dark fairy tales and stories and illustrations inspired by bizarre creatures of Japanese folklore.
It takes a brief encounter with death to cause enduring nightmares.
A single well-placed blow could maim you for life…
One well-placed word could haunt you forever.
Micro-fiction is a blade—sharp, swift…
Sometimes it goes for the jugular, killing you in seconds.
Its silver tongue touches your throat and warm blood hisses before you can scream.
Sometimes, the knife makes micro-cuts in the sensitive sheath of your sanity, creating wounds that will fester throughout eternity.
Take my 100 words daily like a slow-acting poison or read them all and die of overdose.
Your call.
It’s your suicide after all.
Targeted Age Group:: 18 and above
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I’ve always loved writing micro-fiction. I’ve been posting 100-word stories on my blog for more than a year now. My stories have been published in various publications but I’ve always wanted a solo project… something that I could call my own and would truly represent me as a writer.
Whenever I want to have an idea about a particular author’s writing style/ gauge the writer’s versatility, I make sure that I pick up one of their story collections instead of a novel. I love the variety and infinite possibilities that story collections offer. That’s what my book, 100 Nightmares, offers– an eclectic assortment of every imaginable horror that exists, from Lovecraftian to real world horrors down to the extremely bizarre.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Inside 100 Nightmares, you’ll be introduced to a wide variety of crazy characters from odd demons of Japanese folklore to a not-so-innocent Goldilocks… unlikely psychos, twins in utero, an ambitious elf…
I’d like to think that I wrote the book in such a way that any reader is likely to stumble upon his/her own worst nightmare within the pages. 🙂

Katie came home from school, the delicious aroma from the kitchen greeting her.
“Mom?”
An eerie voice reverberated through the hallway.
Her mother was singing some strange, fragmented lullaby…
The door creaked open.
“Shhh…“ Katie’s mother warned. “You’ll wake the baby.”
Part of the blanket fell away to reveal raw turkey cradled in her mother’s arms.
She held it to her breast, lovingly patting its wet pimpled flesh.
“W-Where’s the baby?” Katie quavered.
Her mother’s face split into a demented grin. “Dinner will be ready soon.”
Slowly, numbly, Katie walked towards the kitchen. Something hissed and sputtered in the oven.
