To help her impoverished family, Sophie agrees to marry a wealthy older in far off America. Less than twenty-four hours after she arrives in German’s Mill, Pennsylvania, events have taken a far stranger turn than anything she could have imagined.
Set in Post-Civil-War Pennsylvania, this tale of an arranged marriage is as much family saga as romance. Sophie is a sensitive young woman struggling to make sense of her past and to understand her new homeland. Karl is not only a veteran of the Great War, but scarred by the secret violence of his childhood. How they both learn to trust—and to true love—is a unique story.

How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
This is a romantic story, but it’s not, per se “romance” in the traditional mold. I’m too fond of telling it like it actually was for that. Nevertheless, this is a gentle 19th century love story, about two wounded people who heal one another and form a lasting bond. That sounds like what “romance” ought to be.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
According to Norah Roberts, the secret is to “put your fanny in the chair and write!” It works for me.
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I wanted to write a story about the Pennsylvania countryside that I know so well, but the real inspiration was the story of one of my great-grandmothers who arrived in America aged seventeen and destined to marry the older man (forty-five) who had bought her passage. He was a German doctor and wanted a “pure German bride” who would stay in the house and raise children and cook and not talk back. (I wonder if he got exactly what he bargained for?)
