About Steve Windsor:
Like a “cross between Andrew Vachss, Dexter, and James T. Kirk,” Amazon Bestselling Author Steve Windsor has been pumping out some of the wildest, most controversial, and irreverent thriller books that you’ll never want to admit you secretly love.
His Nine Day Novel series on the details and difficulties of writing fiction hit the Amazon best seller list in just 2 days.
Steve’s fiction thrillers are full of profanity, sarcasm, social satire, and best of all “OMG” action moments. They’re told in a gut-wrenching, hard-hitting style similar to watching a prize-fighter “rabbit-punch” a speed bag.
What inspires you to write?
I love writing! I look at the world around me and try to project our society into the future. It’s pretty easy to imagine a dystopian future as 20 years ago, no one could have imagined that we would have the evil forces pressing down on us that we do.
I love raw and rudely “real” characters. I write angels as cursing killing machines, police as citizen-thumping thugs, and heroes as angry people who’ve simply snapped under the pressure.
Tell us about your writing process.
I am a big fan of Larry Brooks’ description of the Four Part Story Structure and stick to it almost maniacally. I wrote my own take on it in my Nine Day Novel: Writing author how-to book.
As for work habits, when I’m ready to go into writing mode, I go to a coffee shop and write for 10-12 hours a day, getting 10-15,000 words each day until I have a first draft. then I edit it per a procedure my writing partner and I worked out and then ship that edited version to my editor.
When I’m efficient, that process usually takes me about two-weeks of hardcore focused work.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I immerse myself in my characters’ world and then once I’m in there I don’t come out until I’m exhausted. I usually find myself simply chasing characters as they run through their own stories, struggling to keep up with their actions and keep them on the story plot. They don’t alway listen to me.
What advice would you give other writers?
Write, write, write! And don’t let anyone tell you that you aren’t good at it. Writing is a skill that you become more proficient at as you practice. It’s a muscle like anything else is. Work it hard and it gets bigger, stronger and faster. Neglect it, and your abilities atrophy.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I self-publish for speed, control, freedom and simply because I don’t have the following yet to put myself through the torment of rejection after rejection. So I write to practice and get better and improve all of my skills as an author entrepreneur.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
The wild west of self-publishing will soon be over and even new authors will have all the marketing skills that they need in order to successfully publish and market their own books. In short, competition will get more fierce and books will improve and that will mean that authors will have to get better.
