Today, she lives in the beautiful, rainy Pacific Northwest with three very spoiled cats named after Star Trek characters.
What inspires you to write?
Dreams. Most of my novel ideas have come from dreams I’ve had. My dreams are very linear and lucid. I keep a dream journal so that I can draw on them for story ideas.
Tell us about your writing process.
I am part outliner, part seat-of-the-pants writer. Some things I take very seriously, such as doing full biographies for all my characters. I also believe in free-form thinking and keeping meticulous notes of everything that enters your mind regarding your project. I don’t believe in doing a hardcore outline, however. I find it tedious and I seldom follow an outline once completed anyway.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I absolutely listen to my characters. What I love most is when I’m writing in a straight line and my characters grab the keyboard and steer us all out into left field. My most prolific work comes from that.
What advice would you give other writers?
Keep writing. No matter what anyone tells you. I believe everyone has a book in them–or many books. Keep writing and keep submitting until someone says yes. Keep writing even if you have to do it with a crayon on the sidewalk.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I currently have an erotic romance under representation with L. Perkins Agency. It’s been fifteen months since they accepted “On Deployment,” with no nibbles from the major publishing houses yet. Being a bit impulsive and impatient, I decided to indie publish my next novel, “Over the River, Through the Woods.”
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think, with the advent of indie publishing, we will see a proliferation of new voices seldom heard thanks to the methods of the big publishing houses. I think this outpouring of fresh ideas can only be good for publishing as a whole.
