Charity Hillis has always had a thing for fairy tales. She is the author of the ONCE UPON A DESIRE series, including MIDNIGHT RUN (out now), CUTTING LOOSE (coming fall 2015), and PRINCESS SUITE (coming winter 2015). She believes in HEA like she believes in chocolate.
What inspires you to write?
Growing up, my first loves were fairy tales. I think classic story telling holds all kinds of inspiration, and I love transporting fairy tale themes to a contemporary world where the characters have to rely on each other rather than magic.
Tell us about your writing process.
With the ONCE UPON A DESIRE books, I rely heavily on an outline. I like using the “Beat Sheet” to pace my stories before I begin the first draft. The original fairy tales give me the core of my story, but I enjoy making up all the details, too.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Absolutely! When I was writing MIDNIGHT RUN, I was almost through the book before Kingston, the love interest, demanded he get his own POV chapters, too. I’m so glad I listened to him; I loved getting inside his head!
What advice would you give other writers?
It’s been said before, but just keep writing.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to self-publish the ONCE UPON A DESIRE series because there are more romance readers than ever, and with ereaders, it’s even easier to find great books.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think there’s never been a better time to be an author: there are infinite possibilities!
