What inspires you to write?
These days, I get energized when I get positive feedback to my published work. Good reviews in particular. I also get juiced when I catch on to a good image or descriptive passage I can plug into an ongoing story in progress. I also like to follow the flow my characters create.
Tell us about your writing process.
I think I have several different processes. I have a bunch of works in progress and can jump around from story to story when something triggers me to focus on something ongoing. I usually have the general outline of a story in mind before I invest time in the story. That’s not always true; I have two unfinished passages that sit there waiting for a plot to carry the story forward.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I don’t talk to them, but I listen a lot to them. I often say most of my characters created themselves.
Who are your fav authors?
Whew, that’s a long list. Mark Twain, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Frank Herbert, Ian Fleming, Douglas Adams, Tom Clancy . . .
What advice would you give other writers?
Not sure my advice would be worth much except the oft-repeated command to write! Stop making excuses and write. Get off social media and write.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Well, for my first three books, I went on a long quest to find a publisher until I ran into a series editor who knew I was working on Spy Television so he got me hooked up with Praeger Publishers. Then, because Praeger prices their books for libraries, I shifted over to BearManor Media as they price their books for the general reader. But they didn’t invest a minute in helping promote or market my books. That’s when I decided to go indie and created AlienVision.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think the daily avalanche of new titles is going to keep drowning new authors. It’s harder and harder to find your readers as anyone and everyone can and does publish all the time. In one sense, that’s a good thing—if getting published is your goal. If you want to get read, well, 90% of your life isn’t going to be writing, it’s going to be promoting and marketing.
