What inspires you to write?
I write clean romance novels, most of which are set in Salt Lake City and are inspired by my life. For example, Pink and More Pink Haily is a beauty consultant raising her daughter and has a zany American Eskimo dog. I sold Avon for 14 years, have a beautiful daughter, and my own zany American Eskimo Dog. Making a Mess of Things is about a struggling artist like me. Suzy falls for a total business suit that she finds herself entangled with. In my Christmas novella, A Kiss for Kate, Kate’s grandmother is a lot like how my mom was: full of strong opinions, loved thrift store shopping, and desperately wanted me to be happy.
I also write paranormal YA books full of danger, secrets, and magic. As children, my sister and I would pretend we were magical witches and that we could soar into the midnight sky.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
I love to read romance novels. Some of my favorite authors are Kristin Higgins, Debbie Maccomber, and
Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process involves some planning. I start with a concept, jot down some notes, and then start writing. Sometimes, I get stuck and need to go back to brainstorming, and other times, my characters completely take over and change the course of the book.
What advice would you give other writers?
I would advise other writers to write what they love. Do not chase the trends, for they will surely change, and if you do not love what you are writing, chances are your readers won’t.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I have always wanted to be a writer, even in high school. I wrote my first romance novel at age eighteen. However, I was practical and went to college for something besides writing, but in my heart, I never gave up that dream. I pursued publishing and found a home with Champagne Books, a small press. I loved being one of their authors. Later, I became published with a mid-sized publisher, Cedar Fork.
It wasn’t until a few years ago that I decided I wanted to self-publish. I was inspired because my publisher did not want to publish one of my books, and I felt it deserved a chance to be seen. I love the freedom of self-publishing. It has been wonderful. As a new writer, I encourage you to follow your own dreams. As my mom used to say, shoot for the moon; the worst thing that can happen is you’ll land among the stars.

I think the future of publishing looks interesting in a good way.
