About M.E. Rhines:
ME Rhines a southwest Florida native currently living in North Port with her two beautiful children and a third, much larger child whom she affectionately calls husband.
She writes young adult paranormal romance to feed her belief that fairy tales are real and nonsense is necessary.
She also writes adult romances under her edgier alter-ego, Mary Bernsen.
What inspires you to write?
My curiosity about the unknown has always fueled my creative fire. I’m a very open minded person, and while I don’t believe all the ghost stories I hear, I think there’s a lot about our own world we don’t understand. I write with the intention of investigating that hidden part of our existence. Part of me hopes one day I’ll understand it better if I keep poking around!
Tell us about your writing process.
I used to struggle with the idea of an outline. They always came off to rigid and confining to me, and my first couple of works really showed how much I fought against it. So, I developed my own style. I create a bare-bones guide, which I give myself permission to deviate from at any time. I write in the afternoon, then go back and edit at night, and I have a notebook for each book with character outlines and plot notes.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I argue with them. A lot. “No, I didn’t tell you to kill him.” “What?? Who told you to say that?!” Usually, my characters get their way.
What advice would you give other writers?
Keep. Writing. No, seriously. The more you write, the better you’re going to get. If you haven’t found what works for you, you will. Don’t let your failures turn you into a quitter!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I publish with small houses because I like the collaborative effort. I’d love to self-publish, but if I’m honest, it’s nice having a team behind you. I don’t have the technical know-how for a lot of the aspects involved in publishing, so I leave that up to the experts.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think print is going to make a come back (at least, I hope it does!). Digital is great; it’s convenient and modern. But, there’s something about the smell of a brand new book and the smell of fresh ink that can’t be replaced.
