Interview with Author – Kimberly K. Taylor

By Book Goodies

About Kimberly K. Taylor:
Kimberly K. Taylor has been writing stories since she was old enough to hold a pencil, but Delusional Madness is the book of her heart. As a teacher and mental health advocate, Kimberly has always been drawn to the stories that matter most—the ones that challenge, inspire, and remind us of our shared humanity. Her passion for this book grew from her personal experiences with depression and her family’s struggles with mental illness, which gave her a profound empathy for those society has too often silenced.
When she isn’t writing, Kimberly can be found camping with her husband, reading by the fire, or enjoying time with her large, blended family. She lives in Chillicothe, Ohio, where she continues to teach, write, and pursue her dream of giving a voice to the forgotten.

What inspires you to write?
I am inspired to write by the stories history tried to silence. My passion stems from both personal and family experiences with mental health, as I have battled depression for much of my life and witnessed loved ones endure similar struggles. These experiences fuel my empathy for the forgotten and dismissed—particularly women in the 19th century whose lives were often erased with the stroke of a pen.

Through writing, I seek to honor those voices, blending history and fiction to shed light on the resilience of the human spirit even in the face of injustice and suffering. For me, storytelling is not only a creative outlet but also a form of advocacy—a way to preserve truth, inspire compassion, and remind us why dignity and humane care must never be forgotten.

What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
A few of my favorite authors include Mindy McGinnis, Sharon Draper, Harper Lee, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Lois Lowry.

Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process is a blend of research, intuition, and emotional connection. I spend hours digging into historical accounts, records, and details of the time period to create an authentic backdrop. But once I begin writing, I let the characters guide me. I listen closely to their voices, as if they’re whispering their truths into my ear. Sometimes they surprise me by taking the story in directions I hadn’t planned. For me, that’s the magic of storytelling—when the characters stop being words on a page and become living, breathing people I can’t ignore.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Absolutely. I find myself listening to them more than anything else. Cassie and the women of Delusional Madness spoke their pain and resilience into my heart, and my role as the author was simply to give them a voice. Writing often feels less like inventing and more like transcribing the emotions and experiences of people who have been waiting centuries to be heard.

What advice would you give other writers?
Writing is a journey of persistence and courage. My advice to other writers is this: trust your voice. No one else can tell the story that only you can tell. Don’t wait for perfect conditions—write in the cracks of your life if you must. And don’t fear rewriting; the real story often comes alive in revision. Above all, remember that your words matter, and someone out there is waiting for them.

How did you decide how to publish your books?
I chose self-publishing because I wanted full ownership of my story. For a book like Delusional Madness, which blends historical truth with fiction and shines a light on uncomfortable realities, I wanted to make sure nothing was diluted or reshaped by outside forces. Publishing independently gave me the freedom to present the story authentically, in my own voice, while also learning the business side of being an author.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe the future of book publishing is more inclusive and author-driven than ever before. Self-publishing has opened doors for voices that might never have made it past the traditional gatekeepers. Readers today are hungry for diverse, powerful, and unconventional stories, and digital platforms allow us to deliver them directly. At the same time, print will always have its place—there’s something timeless about holding a book in your hands. The beauty of the future is that both models can coexist, giving readers and writers more choice than ever.

What genres do you write?: Historical Fiction

What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
