About Kelly Webber:
Kelly Webber is a librarian and author. When she’s not surrounded by books, she loves spending time outdoors. Hiking, stargazing, and gardening are a few of her hobbies. She has two pets, a cat named Sancho and a bearded dragon named Yossarian. Her writing is often inspired by mythology and nature.
What inspires you to write?
I am most inspired by nature and mythology. I love to spend time outdoors and imagine a fascinating story for everything from constellations & the cosmos to woodland critters & trees.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
Madeleine L'Engle, Suzanne Collins, and Mary Shelley are a few of my favorites!
Tell us about your writing process.
I usually start with short stories to explore a world and get to know the characters. From there, I figure out which characters have a story to tell and outline from there. I also like to play around with different methods of storytelling, like choose-your-own-adventures.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Listen to! I like to listen to two or more characters have a conversation.
What advice would you give other writers?
Read and write as much as you can! Your first story won't be your best, so don't get discouraged – keep writing!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I found a small indie press to the perfect fit for me. I get to work with professional publishers, editors, illustrators, etc., but also have so much creative freedom. I encourage new authors to consider all their options, from self-publishing to the big publishing houses, because you might find something perfect in-between!
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
The future of publishing depends on small indie presses and libraries! I think the best way to ensure a hopeful future for the world of books is to support indie authors and our local libraries/small bookstores.
