About Kayla Krantz:
Kayla Krantz is a proud author, responsible for a number of fantasy novels, and is fascinated by the dark and macabre. Stephen King is her all-time inspiration, mixed in with a little bit of Eminem and some faint remnants of the works of Edgar Allen Poe. When she began writing, she started in horror, but somehow drifted into thriller and fantasy. She loves the 1988 movie, “Heathers.” Kayla was born and raised in Michigan, but traveled across the country to where she currently resides, in Texas.
What inspires you to write?
I'm inspired to write by a majority of sources ranging from dreams to music to pictures. The best inspiration often comes when I'm not searching for it.

Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process has changed greatly over the years. I don't really do much plotting or outlining. I usually start a project by writing down a basic list about what the story is about. I will list some possible names for characters and start writing. When I have a new project, my MC doesn't have a name right away. Usually, it takes a few chapters before they reveal their personality and name to me. This is typically how my entire process is. I don't know much about my characters or story until they are told to me. It's like I just watch my characters live their lives and write up the incident report.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
My characters pretty much have free reign over their stories. I used to try to outline, but I don't do that anymore. I just write and let the characters tell me who they are. From there, the story develops.
What advice would you give other writers?
Never give up.
This is a tough industry, and it's very important to always remember why you wanted to write, why you want to tell your story. Always remember that no one can tell your story the way you can.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
My journey began with a tiny small-press publisher. Unfortunately, that publisher closed their doors in 2016. After the frustrating process of putting my work into the hands of others, I decided to take control over my own career and began to self-publish my works. Currently though, I am shopping for an agent for my psychological thriller, What I Did. I think having a foot in both the indie world and traditional publishing world is important.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
With the rise of self-publishing, the future of books in general is most likely going to shift away from what we've seen in the past. Authors aren't relying on Big 5 publishers like they would've had to in the past. Instead, we have a huge number of authors who are hybrid, releasing books both by indie means and in traditional ways. The future of book publishing will definitely leave authors with more creative control over their works, and there's something wonderful about that.
