About Jim Riley:
I wrote over 60 novels and short stories while incarcerated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. It was not the most conducive place to focus. Correction Officers told me when to get up, shower, eat, take meds, stand for count, watch television, and go to bed. They constantly harassed, sometimes taking my work, which consisted of yellow pads since we had no access to typewriters or computers. I wanted to spend my time productively & decided to write. I hope you enjoy the end products.
What inspires you to write?
I want to make people smile.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
John Stanford, Michael Connelly, John Grisham, James Patterson, Sue Grafton
Tell us about your writing process.
I wrote over 60 novels and short stories using an ink pen and yellow pads. I’m in the process of transcribing them. I do not outline & am the ultimate pants writer. In many of my stories, I didn’t know the ultimate ending until I got there.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I imaging my characters from the folks I’ve met during my life. When faced with a decision or fork, I ask what those people would have done in a similar circumstance.
What advice would you give other writers?
Don’t quit! Work through the tough times.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I promised my wife that I wouldn’t spend any money on publishing. Ergo, I had to go with a traditional publisher. I was lucky to have Next Chapter contract for all of my works.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Audio books will continue their rapid growth.
What genres do you write?: Murder Mysteries
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print, Audiobook
