About Janet Leigh:
J anet Leigh, a B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree, was born in Garland, Texas, and has remained a loyal Texas native her entire life. She decided to take her love of storytelling and her archive of crazy family stories and write her own novel. She published her literary debut The Shoes Come First in 2014. Today, she is a full-time chiropractor and acupuncturist who splits her time between seeing patients and working on her next Jennifer Cloud novel
What inspires you to write?
My crazy family inspires me to write. I love creating the characters and watching as they help me weave a story.
Tell us about your writing process.
I consider myself a plantser. I am learning how to outline and create character sketches. I didn't do this in my first book, and I feel it makes the writing journey much easier.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I always listen to my characters. I can hear the way I want their voices to sound. If I write a line that doesn't jive with my characters, they tell me "I wouldn't say that!"
What advice would you give other writers?
Write your story. Have a good editor, a good cover and publish the thing. Don't fret over every word.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to self-publish because I have a very demanding day job and I wasn't sure I could meet a deadline. I set my deadlines, and if I run a little late, I'm still OK.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think the future is promising. I was afraid ebooks would take over the publishing industry, but my kids still prefer print to ebook when they read novels, so there is hope.
