Desire of My Heart by Heidi Gray McGill
1858, Missouri. Rachel has already lost too much—her parents, her security, and now her freedom as the orphanage prepares to marry her off to a stranger. Refusing to surrender her future, she risks everything to escape with her younger brother.
They encounter Melvin, a grieving widower struggling to raise two young children. But it’s Charlie, desperate to secure their future, who proposes a bold solution: a marriage of convenience. What begins as a practical arrangement soon stirs unexpected feelings, drawing Rachel into a family she never imagined possible.
Yet heartache has a way of finding those who dare to hope. When tragedy strikes, Rachel must cling to her faith, her community, and those she loves. Through every trial, she discovers that even the darkest night can give way to God’s promise of joy in the morning.
Desire of My Heart is a moving Christian historical romance filled with themes of faith, resilience, and found family. If you love stories of courage, redemption, and love growing from unlikely beginnings, this novel will capture your heart. Fans of Misty M. Beller, Lacy Williams, and Linda Ford will feel right at home.

Excerpt from the Book
“Charlie, you let me do the talking.” A slight nod was all she received as they approached Mr. Trexler.
“Mr. Trexler, this is my brother, Charlie.” The two sized each other up during a long handshake.
Rachel took a breath to speak, but Charlie jumped in, “My sister here needs a husband, and I need a job.”
Rachel gasped.
“You seem like a decent man. Marry Rachel, and she’ll help with the kids. I’ll work for you till I can stand on my own.” He thrust out his hand. “Deal?”
“Charles Dalton!” Rachel exclaimed.
“Deal,” Mr. Trexler said.
The men went on making plans while Rachel stood in stunned silence. As soon as they were away from the orphanage, she promised herself Charlie would get a proper tongue-lashing—if she could get her tongue to cooperate.
