What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Two different ideas converged. I had been doing a lot of reading about the reporter Nellie Bly, and wanted to write something involving her. Simultaneously, I was playing with the idea of what it would actually take, in our real world, for something like a secret society of werewolves to actually remain secret.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
There are four different main characters. In order of introduction, they are:
Veer (Short for Vera) Rosen: She's my "Nellie Bly" character. Since the novel is contemporary, I made her a modern day investigative reporter to whom Nellie Bly was a childhood hero, and she followed in her footsteps and copied her schtick of going undercover to infiltrate and expose corrupt organizations.
Michael Diaz: I wanted someone outside the werewolf organization who would be investigating them, so I came up with a homicide detective. He's loosely based on an old friend of mine who was a Portland police officer back in the 90s: Honest and compassionate, but takes law enforcement seriously.
Carl: I wanted a younger person near the bottom of the hierarchy, someone just starting out in life and exposed to all the failings of the system. In his case, both the Were system that severely limits his options and the economic system in Portland that makes living there so difficult.
Gordon: Gordon was actually intended to die in his opening scene, but I decided to spare him and see where his story went. Unlike the others, he has no vested interest in any of the factions. His life is upended and all he really wants is a return to his formerly comfortable normality. He's inspired by everyone I knew who used to be "not into politics" but became more invested in them after they realized that politics affected them whether they were interested or not.
