Targeted Age Group:: 5-10 years old

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
The idea to start writing for children came one day at our local bookstore. As an avid book-reader, I often find myself gravitating to the children’s book section. It was then, while browsing through the assortment of books available, I noticed there weren’t many with clear, character-building lessons behind them.

The question came to mind…”What would I want my children to read one day?”

That’s when I decided I wanted my writing to not only be fun and enjoyable for children, but also teach important life lessons and character qualities. The discussion questions included at the end of each chapter help enforce these lessons as well as provide an opportunity for parents to further expound upon them.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The character inspiration is one of my favorite things about the book…all of them were inspired by real dogs which have been a special part of my family over the years. Their pictures are even included at the back of the book.

Wait for the Turtle

“Charity! Wait up!”

I slid to a stop and turned to see my best friend running to catch up, her long ears flying behind her. “Hurry up, Sadie! He’s getting away!”

‘He’ was Mr. Ribbit-Hopper, a bright green frog who lived in the pond behind the castle. Sadie and I enjoyed chasing him anytime he wandered from his lily pad home. So far, he always managed to out hop us…but we weren’t giving up.

“Where’d he go?” Sadie asked, panting as she skidded to a stop beside me.

I pointed to the bushes in front of us. “I saw him go in there.”

“Shhh!” Sadie said. “Maybe we can sneak up on him.”

I crouched low to the ground and began to crawl underneath the bushes with Sadie right behind me, both of us trying to be as silent as possible. I’m not sure we succeeded, though. The prickly edges of the branches kept getting caught in my fur and made a rustling sound when I pushed them away. I was glad when we crawled out on the other side of the bushes.

“There he is,” I said to Sadie in a whisper.

“Where? I don’t see him.”

“Right there.” I pointed to a big rock where Mr. Ribbit-Hopper sat with his back to us.

“Oh,” Sadie said. “I see him now. Do you think he knows we’re here?”

I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t know, but I hope not.”

“Well, what are we waiting for?” Sadie asked. “Let’s go catch us a frog.”

Carefully, we snuck closer and closer to the rock. I smirked. Mr. Ribbit-Hopper didn’t seem to know we were there. When we were close enough, I held up a paw and counted to three in a whisper.

“1…2…3, go!”

As soon as I said go, we pounced.

However, in our excitement of possibly catching Mr. Ribbit-Hopper, neither of us noticed how close the rock was to the pond. I was slightly in front of Sadie, so this was a fact I realized first.

“Wait, Sadie! Stop!”

But it was too late.

Sadie, being a basset hound, was much longer and heavier than I, and the rock much too small to hold both of us. As her front paws landed on the rock, one of her long ears ended up underneath those paws throwing her off balance and causing her to bump into me. Both of us went tumbling into the pond with a loud SPLASH!
