I just went through the process of self publishing my first E-Book, Control Your Day. The book provides a fresh way to manage tasks, priorities and messages using Microsoft Outlook and the concepts of GTD. I released the book about a month before I ran my first Amazon KDP Free offering. In 3 days, I had 3000 downloads and hit #119 out of more thank 1 million free books. I attribute some of that success to the book cover which I outsourced through Elance.com
Elance provides a platform where you can post bids for work and interact with contractors from around the world. You can ask for a quote on any component of the book publishing process including cover design, editing, proofreading, formatting, marketing and many other areas. As you receive quotes back you can see how much money each contractor has earned on Elance, how many jobs they have done and reviews from their past customers.
I posted a job for cover design on Elance, within 2 days I had over 20 quotes that all fit within my budget ($50.00 to $100.00). I emailed back and forth with a few different contractors and selected the one I wanted to work with. We exchanged ideas and concepts via email and within about a week, I had my book cover. You can see it on amazon at http://amzn.com/B00B39SN0Q.
Once you select a contractor, you an decide if you want to place the funds for the job into an escrow account at Elance or wait until the job is completed. You can also set milestones and make payments as they are completed. There is no cost to use the service, Elance takes their cut out of the contractors revenue.
Everyone’s time is limited, you need to decide what you can do best with the time you have and then consider outsourcing the other work so that you can deliver a high quality product to your audience. If you have any questions about Elance, you can post them here or contact me through my website.
