What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I wanted to write something that made mental illness accessible – something genuine based on my own experiences. I also wanted to write an entertaining story for teens, since I've been writing t.v. for teens for years and know the audience well.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
My characters are largely based on people I know in real life – friends, acquaintances, patients I met in the hospital. Others just popped up in my head while I was writing and I rounded them out according to the needs of different story lines.
At the beginning of junior year, the words my classmates would have used to describe me were: normal, average, everyday, medium at everything, B person, Plain Jane. At the end of junior year, the words they would have used to describe me were: weirdo, schizo, psycho, “F” for freak person. How does a solid B tumble to a solid F in the space of one semester? It happens when she is hiding a giant secret about who she really is. It happened slowly and all at once, when my cover was blown and the real me seeped out and changed everything. For good.
