In Washington, the Vietnam War was a war of statistics, and it cost thousands everything, in the form of those who died in that distant land, and those whose bodies were never recovered. These are the statistics known, and each is represented on the Vietnam War Memorial.
The statistic that is not known is the war’s impact on the thousands who returned to live lives of physical and mental torture, forced to constantly relive their awful experiences, and the impact on those who remained home. Time Passed tells three of these stories.
Daniel Gardner, Phillip Russ and Benjamin Simms all served in Vietnam as Huey crewmembers. Each was shot down and suffered unbearable torture, and all three returned to decades-long lives of silent torture. But their lives changed when an unexplained event brought them together for the first time.
Time Passed is not the usual Vietnam War book, and the stories will make you wonder what American POWs endured in that distant land. It may make you angry or it may make you cry, but it will give you a new respect for the human endurance, America’s military, and those in their lives.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I wanted to write a book to honor Vietnam veterans, but not the usual war story. I chose to write stories about torture and how those experiences affected the soldiers and their loved ones.
I also wanted to honor those whose bodies remain missing, and I chose to tie that part of the story through the prologue, the extra-ordinary events in the main story, and the epilogue.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The three main characters are Daniel Gardner, Benjamin Simms and Phillip Russ. I chose to make all three characters part of helicopter crewmembers who are shot down at different times during the war, and who suffered different experiences.
I also wanted to emphasize the impact of war on those who remain home and do not know what is happening day-to-day with their loved ones. This was a significant factor during the Vietnam War as families had no electronic communication.
