What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
It all started with a dream. A dream that soon became an obsession. I had to get it out of my head and onto the page. Things from there started to take on a life of their own.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Each character represents something, and are all part of a larger tapestry. Meaning they are much more than what they first seem.
It beckoned I follow in launching the spread of its breadth, leering long to the left, where flew the fiend to a line of buildings held in the distance, stationed over to the side just beyond the hill. And so I followed it, the crow, to its next perch paused atop building ledge. When getting there I saw it again spread its wingspan to approaching some new alleyway that I went into also and down the next, unable to stop from tracking it. So finally I leapt into a run to catch the bird of prey before it departed around yet another corner. What I came upon there, it stopped me dead.
The fowl creature had gone and in its ascending absence led me straight into the thick of something fully unnatural becoming. What I saw could only be described as this: In the limelight of some dimly lit backdoor dead-end alley the massive body of some poor soul lay on the ground beside a dumpster with feet twitching madly. There, stationed as knelt over the hulking mass, another equally menacing figure with back to me. The one kneeling, he looked to be as though in public uniform. Might he have been providing aid and not be in fact the victim’s assailant? This city isn’t safe anymore… I should use caution. But I need confirmation, should they themselves be in need of my assistance.
“Hello…? Is everything okay…? Are you in need of any assistance?”
“No…” came back the half dead sound of one struggling to push the word out, as though succumb by some monumental weakness. It was not issued by the fallen and potentially fatally wounded however.
“And are you sure you’re not hurt?” I asked again as approaching closer.
“No…not you…not now.” The weakness turned to what sounded more a panic, and the voice it was one I recognized.
He got up and turned to face me, and his mouth it was covered in blood, darker than the river Lethe flowing into Hypnos’ abyss. His eyes were black obsidian demise, retreating to whatever empty void he crawled out of and the veins throbbed on his neck and face like a swelling about to rupture; set ready to burst his pasty white head like the popping of a pimple. He was an image of grotesque, making to shield himself from my eyes. But the damage was already done.
“Castor…!” I gasped out in horror. “What… What are…? What have you done!?” I shouted in the abashed repulsion of a horrific dismay at seeing the true face of the beast, as coming closer like being pulled by some invisible tractor beam of abhorrence; unable to turn away.
“Stay back!” he shouted, with an edgy step away.
It was then that I saw what he was protecting. The body, great behemoth that it was, lay asunder. His carotid artery torn wide, the red and the black of a river run down—dead.
“By the Goddess, what have you done? Have you…? You’ve killed him!” The shock riddled me with the sickness. How did this happen, and where is the connection? Goddess help me.
“He should be so lucky,” Castor strained to whisper to me.
