What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I wanted to write a book about a young woman who escapes from an unpleasant relationship – looking at how she became trapped in it in the first place and how she achieved her escape – with twists and turns along the way.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The Australian population is made up of people who have immigrated from different ethnicities and countries from around the world. I wanted my main characters to reflect this.

The knocking at the front bedroom stopped and a few minutes later I saw a shadow passing Clara’s window. The blinds were closed but the light from the car park projected his shadow. I held my breath praying that someone hadn’t left the yard access door unlocked. I heard him try to open it; without success. It then sounded like he was attempting to gain access by the kitchen window. All the windows in the flat had slide openings. There were external fly screens fitted across the openings, which he could easily remove – if he had the right tools, but I’d checked all the windows were locked.
The shadow approached Clara’s window where he stopped, attempting to loosen the screen. Every muscle in my body tensed ready for flight, and I held a shaky hand poised over Clara’s mouth in case she woke. I could hear the sound of my heartbeat pounding away – far too rapidly. I conjured up an image of mountains – like the mountains that surrounded my hometown as a child in order to slow my breath and heartrate.
