My debut book “The Soulmates” is a transgender love story and is inspired by news stories from around the world.
Targeted Age Group:: 16+
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I was born and raised in Mumbai, the commercial capital of India. I saw many transgenders begging in the trains / on the traffic signals and was very curious about them but couldn't get satisfactory replies. Gradually, i started reading about them on the internet and was felt very sad about the treatment meted out to them in our society. But, on the positive side, i read about various news stories about transgenders finding love and settling down to a happy married life. My book is inspired by such news stories.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
There are two main characters in the story –
1. Shubha, a transgender, who has faced many hardships and struggles for obvious reasons. I have read news about people coming out about their gender to their family. Most of the times, they are abandoned, criticized, harassed and mistreated by the society despite being well educated and efficient at their work. Shubha represents such kind of persons – She is intelligent, well qualified, is able to give the best to her work but still not confident enough to talk about her gender issues to anybody.
2. Mukul, a divorcee, who falls in love with Shubha. The story weaves around various emotions & thoughts arising in Mukul's mind about accepting Shubha as a life partner.

It was Friday morning and Shubha had left for office as per her usual time. She was staying at Gopalan Residency which was about 1.5 kms from the nearest metro station. She boarded an autorickshaw and reached Vijayanagar metro Station on time to catch her regular 8.46 train. She boarded the train and took a seat. She took out her iPhone X from her handbag and started playing Township. She had been playing the game since last 3 years and had got kind of addicted to it. But she had installed an app which locks the game during office hours so that it doesn't interfere with her office work.
The train had just crossed the Majestic Interchange when she got a call from her colleague. While talking on phone, she noticed a man standing across her and busy reading something on his mobile. He looked very calm and composed and appeared to be lost in his own world. He seemed to be in his mid-thirties and about 6 feet height. He was wearing a blue formal shirt, black trousers and formal black shoes. Typical office goer Shubha thought. But something was not typical about him. He seemed to be quite fit and had a flat stomach unlike other men of his age. Shubha thought that he might be associated with some sports. Her thoughts were confirmed when she saw a sports watch on his left-hand wrist. He was not very handsome, but still Shubha felt a strange attraction towards him, and she kept staring at him for a few more minutes.
Suddenly the man looked up from his mobile and looked around. Shubha quickly turned her eyes towards a girl standing near the gate. After a few seconds she directed her attention to her mobile, but she was still thinking about him. She was trying to concentrate in her game when the announcement was made that the train is approaching Trinity Metro Station. She quickly got up and went towards the gate. As the train stopped, she got down at the metro station and went to her office. She didn't realized that something has happened to her. She has fallen in love with the man at first sight.
Mukul had recently started working as Vice President (Finance) with Crisiant Industries Limited. He was reporting to the CFO at the Corporate office which was located near Indiranagar metro station.
It was a board meeting today and Mukul wanted to be thoroughly prepared as it was the first board meeting after his joining, and he didn’t wanted any last-minute blunders. He had decided to reach half hour early to the office and has missed his workout today also. He had missed his workouts for several days now as he had been sitting late in the office for the quarterly closing of accounts and for preparation for the Board meeting. He was hoping that he would be able to resume his workouts from Saturday as he would be relatively free after the Board meeting.
He had boarded the Purple line metro from Majestic Interchange. He was staying in Block 2, Jayanagar. After several trial and errors, he had come to the conclusion that travel by Namma Metro was the best option although it required him to change trains at Majestic interchange. Since it was peak hour, he knew that he won’t be able to get any seat and will have to stand for another 15 minutes till Indiranagar. He won’t mind that either. He has seen worse than this. He has stayed in Mumbai for major part of his working life and has travelled in local trains and so travel in Namma Metro was much better. He turned his attention to his loyal companion – his Oneplus 5t. Since he has already checked mails while on the Green line, he started his favourite activity for transit time – reading e-books.
He was engrossed in his reading when there was an announcement of another station approaching. He looked around for any empty seats and felt that a beautiful girl of about 22-23 years was staring at him. When he looked at her, she turned her face away which gave Mukul an opportunity to study her. The girl was of fair complexion and had elbow length hair. She was wearing formals – white shirt and grey trouser, and black flat formal shoes. Mukul assumed that she must be working with some law firm or consultancy firm. Mukul didn’t wanted to stare at her but he was mesmerized by her beauty and just couldn’t stop looking at her. He felt that god has himself handcrafted her and as what they say, she had perfect things at perfect places. He couldn’t take his eyes off her. Suddenly, the girl stood up and went towards the door to get down at the next station which was Trinity. Mukul started reading again on his mobile occasionally looking at the girl. He also noticed that the girl would be about his height. When the girl got down at the metro station, he continued to look at her till the train started moving.
Shubha reached home in the late evening after a tiring and hectic work day. Cooking was one of her stress busters and she preferred to eat homemade food. She decided to cook Khichdi for herself. While the khichdi was simmering, she couldn’t help thinking about the man she was staring at in the morning. She has been thinking about him in the office too. She was really impressed with calm, serene and satisfied composure on his face. Shubha had noticed that he was totally involved in his mobile without any worry about the world about him. He seemed to be quite different than other regular travellers on the metro. She had also noted that the man was not wearing any ring on his fingers which might suggest that he is not married. She had noted that he seemed to be too happy to be married. Shubha thought that there is a good chance that he is not married. Whenever she would think of him, she would feel butterflies fluttering in her stomach and her heart beats would get faster. This has been happening with her for the first time. And she was quite happy with the feelings.
But her mind was not allowing her to feel happy. Her mind reminded her that all her previous attempts at relationships have failed and that God has not made her to have relationships. She felt that any relationship is bound to be domed once she shares her secret. Her mind would remind her again and again that she is the unluckiest person in the world.
After the board meeting was over, Mukul had a long meeting with his CFO and then another meeting with the auditors. He was tired by the time he reached home in the night. He took a shower and opened his tiffin which has been delivered at his home. He started eating his food and unlocked his mobile to continue reading the book which he had been reading in the metro. When he opened the App, he remembered the young girl he saw in the metro. He remembered that she was very beautiful and really looked like a model. Mukul also remembered that he had felt in the morning that she was staring at him which made him think that the girl might be interested in him. Mukul decided that he would leave home early on Monday and would catch the same train. He thought that there is nothing wrong in looking at a girl. After all, he is not married now. Maybe a bit old, but nothing wrong in having some fun.
2 days later
Shubha was preparing breakfast and was excited to go to office. She had been thinking a lot over the weekend and had decided to listen to her heart at least for now. She felt a new sense of happiness today. She hoped that God has listened to her prayers and has finally sent someone for him. After having breakfast and getting ready, she left for the metro station on time and got into her usual metro train. She occupied the same seat and started waiting anxiously for the Majestic Interchange metro station. She was hoping and praying that he would come in the same train today also.
Mukul boarded the purple line metro at the Majestic Interchange and was happy at the first sight of the beautiful girl at the same place. He smiled and stood at a distance. He took out his mobile and pretended to be busy. He has been thinking about her all the while in the green line and could not check mails as per his usual routine.
Shubha had seen him standing at the metro station long before the train came to a halt. He was wearing a different shade of blue shirt with black Trousers and black shoes. She felt her lips forming into a smile. She blushed as her heart started beating faster. But her mind chided her, and she kept her head down and tried to focus on her mobile game. She didn't knew anything about the man and considering her bad experiences in the past, she didn't wanted to rush for any relationship.
Mukul was trying to check mails on his mobile but was feeling distracted. This kind of distraction has happened to him after a long time. He had been looking at the girl intermittently. Since he was standing, he could get a good view of the girl. She was wearing similar professional looking clothes, but it was pink shirt today. Mukul saw that she was playing some game on her mobile. He felt that the girl was also looking at him occasionally although their eyes could not meet. As the train approached Trinity metro station, Mukul saw her getting up from the seat and their eyes met for a few seconds. Mukul saw that her beautiful brown eyes were trying to tell him something. When the announcement was repeated, the girl turned suddenly and went towards the gate. Mukul couldn’t control himself and continued to look at her when she got down at the metro station. As the train started moving, he felt that girl had turned back and looked at his direction although for a few seconds.
Few hours later
Mukul started his lunch a little late as he was busy with a conference call. While having lunch in his office cabin, he was watching the news, but his mind was elsewhere. He was thinking about the beautiful girl he had seen in the train. He was in two minds today. While, on the one hand, he felt attracted towards the girl, other part of his mind wanted him to abstain from thinking about her. One part of his mind told him that he should again think about settling down after moving to Bengaluru since now he can take out some time for dating. But then he thought that he is not that young and felt a kind of regret. He thought that he had a fair share of fun in his life and now he is a living a simple life and doesn't want to get into any complexities. He thought that being single, he can enjoy and live his life as per his wish and he doesn’t want to get into any relationship now. His thoughts went back to his marriage days and then divorce after a few years. He also thought about his attempts at dating after his divorce and his so-called affair with Payal. The thought of Payal spoiled his mood. He quickly finished his lunch and went for a walk. He decided that he is done with relationships and doesn't want any further complications in his life.
Shubha boarded her regular train in the morning but decided not to take seat. She was feeling very anxious today. She had been thinking about the man the whole of previous day. She had felt that the man had been checking her out sporadically in the train the earlier day and she had felt attracted towards him when their eyes had met for a few seconds. Shubha remembered that she was almost lost in a trance after their eyes had met and she had forgot to get down at her destination. She also felt that the man was looking in her direction when she had got down at the metro station. Her mind told her that she is getting desperate to get into a relationship and she might fail this time too. She was not sure that everything will be alright after she shares her secret with him. She knew that he would not come to know if she doesn't share it with him, but she didn't wanted to be unethical in her personal matters. She believed that telling lies or hiding something from a loved one would be like cheating yourself. She didn't wanted to build the edifice of her love life on an unstable foundation. The more she thought about him, the more she felt inability to do anything about it except to trust her heart. And her heart told her that he is the right one for her.
She was hopeful that she would be able to have a good look at him and maybe give some indication that she is interested in him. When the train reached Majestic, she saw him standing at the platform. She eagerly waited for him to board the train but even after all the passengers have boarded and the train has started moving, he was nowhere to be seen in the coach. She felt disappointed.
Mukul had skipped his workout today also and left his home earlier. He had an early meeting today with the ERP consultant. After slogging for almost 3 months, he had realized that he will have to take initiative to improve the ERP software so that the reports can be generated on time. He knew it was a tedious process but was also aware of the long-term benefits. He reached the Majestic Interchange and after looking at his watch, realized that this is the same train in which the beautiful girl would be there. He decided to skip the train and instead took the next train. He had thought a lot the earlier night and had decided that his decision taken during the lunch time was perfect. It would be better to keep away from her. He had reasoned that once he starts talking to her, it would be difficult for him to track back. He thought that he should concentrate on his career and on his other adventures. He decided to catch his regular train next day onwards. Soon he got busy checking mails and reading e book.
Shubha got down from the metro at the Trinity metro station and was feeling very low. She decided to wait for some time at the station to compose herself. She thought that maybe he missed the train and might be in the next train and she might be able to get a glance at him if she waits. As soon as the next train came, she tried to look inside the train. She saw him standing in the train busy with his mobile and with the same composed face. She kept looking at him till the train started moving. She went to office with a bad mood but with a hope that he would board the same train next day.
Shubha had boarded her regular train hoping that she might be able to see him today. She was anxiously waiting for him at Majestic interchange, but she was more disappointed today as she could not see him even at the station. She was disheartened and could not hold back her tears. She got down at Trinity and went to office with a heavy heart.
She kept looking for him every day in the metro. She even tried to look in other coaches despite the rush hour traffic but couldn’t even get a glimpse of him. She had never felt that kind of attraction towards anyone till now. Her mind tried to convince her that she is not made for any relationships and should not entertain such thoughts and that she will have to live a life of abandonment and loneliness. Her mind also reminded her that she should be grateful that she has got a better life as compared to other people of her like.
But her heart had a different story to tell her. It is said that if you desire something with your whole heart, all forces of the universe conspire to ensure that you get what you want. And Shubha had always believed this. Shubha’s heart was not ready to listen to the reasonings & logic of her mind. Her heart has fallen for the man and Shubha knew that one day she will be able to meet him, her prince charming who will take her out of loneliness into the beautiful world of love, friendship and togetherness. She knew that he is the one who will give her all the happiness she had always desired. She knew that he is the one who will make her complete.
