What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I was impressed with the annual broadcasts of Queen Elizabeth II from my boyhood. These broadcasts, first on radio and then on television, gave us Her Majesty's compassionate review of the year as well as her reflections on the significance of Christmas, and also of Easter in 2020.
My latest book, The Queen's Christmas and Easter Messages, reflects my admiration and appreciation of the global influence and example of Queen Elizabeth II.
Our family regularly listened to her broadcasts on Christmas Day. When I read the transcripts of them I was impressed with The Queen's insights about the meaning of Christmas, so I comment on excerpts of her Christmas Messages throughout her reign, the longest-reigning British monarch in history.
I include a reflection on The Queen's historic Easter broadcast in 2020, the only Easter message during her long reign. She described the significance of Easter for a world impacted by the coronavirus pandemic with churches closed for the first time at Easter.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
2020 saw the coronavirus COVID-19 spread worldwide. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II historically addressed the nation and the Commonwealth on Palm Sunday, April 5. Her Majesty’s message included these significant observations during the coronavirus pandemic:
“Across the Commonwealth and around the world, we have seen heart-warming stories of people coming together to help others, be it through delivering food parcels and medicines, checking on neighbours, or converting businesses to help the relief effort.
“And though self-isolating may at times be hard, many people of all faiths, and of none, are discovering that it presents an opportunity to slow down, pause and reflect, in prayer or meditation.”
Then on Easter Saturday, with churches worldwide closed for Easter and most people required to stay home, The Queen broadcast her only Easter message given during her reign.
This 2020 edition of this book includes an excerpt from Her Majesty’s Easter message.
