What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
While visiting the WW1 Commonwealth war graves in Belgium and France I noticed many headstones had the sad inscription Known Only to God. Soldiers' military records were hand written, would it be possible, during the carnage of battle, for a soldier to swap identity with a dead comrade. I asked London's Imperial War Museum and Australia's War Memorial, both replied it would have been possible but unlikely as it would be a capital offence. That was good enough for me to write The Proposition. My character wasn't caught.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Both characters were purely my invention. However, the carnage of WW1 affected every soldier. My grandfather ans his brother came home very different men. I wanted my characters to reflect this.
