What if you could find a system that was actually designed to help you become productive? A system that would transform the way you make decisions, enable you to follow through on the promises you make and help you become successful not in one area of your life but in every area that matters to you: from your personal life to your work life; from your family relationships to your friendship; from your private world to your social world.
Welcome to The Productive Life: 7 Keys to Living a Productive Life, where you will learn, not just a few tricks or hacks to handle a few parts of your life, but a way of thinking and acting that will open a doorway to a whole new way of living in the moment and enable you to create the future that you have barely dared to dream about.
The Productive Life is all about being excellent and doing great things through your whole life and not just in your work life. Just image what your life would be like if you invested significant time and energy in the pursuit of productive rest, play, hobbies, spirituality, work life, family life, friendships, etc.
I have devoted my life to being productive in every area of my life and not just in my work life. I have distilled everything I have learnt and practiced into a book exploring the 7 Keys that have helped me to live a truly productive life.
Here is how the 7 Keys will help you solve 7 challenges you will face in life:
1. When you struggle to find meaning in life, the KEY is to Live Your Mission.
2. When you forget to do important things, the KEY is to Manage Your Actions.
3. When you battle to break or keep habits, the KEY is to Build Your Habits.
4. When you neglect important areas of your life, the KEY is to Plan Your Time.
5. When you get easily distracted, the KEY is to Focus Your Mind.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
For years I have had people ask me to coach them to get things done and become more productive and it always led to positive results. I finally got around to putting what I teach them in a book format!
By now you may be wondering: Who is this person writing a book on productivity? Are they qualified to say anything on this topic? Does he know what he's talking about. Is this a worthwhile investment of my hard-earned cash?
Well, for the past 30 years I have been a student of productivity. During my four years as a student at a seminary in Johannesburg, South Africa, I stumbled across a book by Stephen Covey entitled: The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, and began to work on the big picture of my life. Within a few months I had really made great progress. I was immediately hooked on productivity and implemented what I read in the book and taught it to my kids (Keegan and Ashley you owe me!) and anyone that I came in contact with (you all owe me!). I even invested my hard-earned cash to purchase and fanatically use the Franklin/Covey planner every day for years.
Many years later I stumbled across a book by David Allen entitled: Getting Things Done, in which I discovered a system for action management. This happened during a season of my life in which I was building a movement of leadership development across the continent of Africa called Sonlife Africa. I had the privilege of training thousands of leaders in a dozen African countries but I always felt like something was lacking even though we were providing incredible training for leaders using action-based learning techniques that I learned when I completed a diploma in Training and Development at Damelin College in Johannesburg.
Actually, just this week I came up with a principle that resonated really well with issues I have been dealing with and I believe it provides some insights into what was limiting some of the impact that could have resulted through the training I did across Africa. It is best summed up in this phrase that came to me this week:
“Watch Your Dismount!”
Imagine being a gymnast and you have just completed a near flawless routine on the apparatus but as begin your dismount your hand slips off the bar and you fall to the mat. Imagine the frustration you feel and the shame at the less than swan-like ending to a new flawless performance. As you wait for what seems like an hour for the judges to hold up their scoring cards you know that you are not going to get the score that you had spent months training for. Obviously, that last movement in your routine is critical to the entire performance. The judges would probably give you credit for your brilliant performance before the dismount but that dismount is the difference between a brilliant routine and a less than perfect performance.
In life, we will never be as effective as we can be unless we get our “dismount” right. The leaders I trained in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Zimbabwe, Congo, Egypt, Malawi and my own country South Africa, could never be as effective as they could be unless they got their “dismount” right and dare I say, you will never be as effective as you could be unless you get your “dismount” right.
To live a Productive Life – where we get important things done (including the essential last 90% of the task or project) – we must determine what we want to do with our lives; set clear and challenging goals; and focus on what really matters in the moment to avoid distractions. If we “lose our grip on the bar” we will stumble and fall just when it matters most.
So, back to my journey and “credentials” …
I had implemented a “top-down” system from Stephen Covey and then a “bottom-up” system from David Allen and yet, until a few more pieces fell into place I was still not nailing that last 10% to make sure that I landed well. My dismount was sometimes still a little shaky!
The next critical part of my system appeared as I was creating and presenting monthly training session for Interns serving in Every Nation churches around Johannesburg in the year I launched this book. As I created a session on Habits, I read 13 different books on habits and the missing pieces of my productivity system began to fall into place. Finally it looked like I would be able to ensure that future “dismounts” would be a whole lot more graceful! Some of the key books that informed my thinking around habits were:
1. High Performance Habits by Brendon Burchard
2. Atomic Habits by James Clear
3. Habit Stacking by Steve Scott
Around that time I also stumbled across the book The ONE Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan that added another piece to my approach to productivity: a system for goal setting that included using your calendar as a secret weapon to create your future.
My wife and I had been using a digital version of the 5 Minute Journal for some months and I experimented with a number of other productivity journal and once again I did what I have always done best – which is to stand on the shoulder of giants – and I created something new as my own Productive Life planner was born.
I knew instinctively that what I was developing should not die with me but needed to be shared with others. And quite frankly I was getting tired of people asking me when I was going to write my first book.
Over the years people have often commented to me about my ability to get things done; how I follow through promises I make; how I almost never forget to do things; how I add extra value to every meeting I attend; how I always seem to have information they need at my fingertips. Some may conclude that I am brilliant but to be honest at school I was a pretty average student and even though I excelled in my training studies and as a theological student, my ability to get things done or live a Productive Life has very little to do with intelligence. Rather it is the result of the systems and strategies I use to be productive – and I am delighted to be able to share them with you in this book.
Along the way I will point you to read books or to use tools that others have created – honestly, without their help, I would definitely not be living a Productive Life.
I have always believed that sharing everything I know via my website is enough (you can check it out at http://www.ymresourcer.com) but this is about to take things to a whole new level. In fact, as I have been implementing the Miracle Equation by Hal Elrod, I have created a vision to build a network of productivity coaches across the globe and I believe that my book will form the foundation of the work that our coaches do with people, just like you.
I hope this book will in some way allow you to experience the impact I have been able to have on people over decades after I shared my approach to personal productivity with them in face to face engagements. Here is an email I got recently that captures what I believe you will feel when you finish working through this book: “There is so much that I am grateful for and the time I spent with you has transformed my life. You taught me a model for managing my life and time and it has been a great resource that has helped me and I have had the privilege of sharing it with many leaders in our congregation and it has changed their lives. Kind Regards, Moses.” (Moses Thato Williani is a next generation leader I’ve known for two years from Gaborone, Botswana and who spent a week shadowing me and our high school ministry in Johannesburg a year ago).
And so, you hold in your hands a book that has been developed over three decades and I invite you to join me as your guide on a journey towards living a Productive Life.
As you make your way through the following chapters you will discover seven keys to mastering your whole like that will help you live a Productive Life. You will take back control of your life and your future dismounts will be as close to perfect as possible!
