In March, the days in north Idaho are cool with lows dropping down into the thirties during the night. Two young boys, Clint and Syd, passed the midpoint of the old wooden bridge when the youngest, Clint, asked his brother a question.
“Do you think the folks will be mad ‘cause we’re coming home late?”
“Nah, grandma called her before we left,” Syd replied, watching where he was stepping in the dark.
Clint stumbled.
“Whoa!” he called out.
“What’s the matter?” Syd asked.
“I slipped on something.”
“Must have been ice on one of these planks,” Syd said.
“Yeah. Come on, let’s hurry up. This ol’ bridge gives me the willys.”
As the boys stepped onto the graveled road off the bridge, a low moan echoed over the icy water. Clint jumped. Syd looked behind them. Headlights wavered in the distance from a car approaching the north side of the one-lane bridge.
“Come on,” Syd said, “it’s just a car.”
