What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I was inspired by the thought that time, culture, and technology are cyclical. The human race could go back to the Stone Age and rise again.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I created the main character by the idea of someone being drafted into a medieval militia. I started there and the details about him came to me as I wrote.

Alek was a young man who lived with his mother, his Uncle Remi, and his Aunt Tilda in the small village of Brookville. Just now, he was sitting at his uncle's table listening to his mother fret.
"I can't believe you Alek," she said. "That was the third job this month. Your uncle Remi is going to be so upset." She stood in the kitchen, arms crossed under her breasts, the light from the window behind her reduced his mother to a dark silhouette. He looked down at the table that his uncle had built, pretending to be interested in the wood grain.
"I did everything he told me to do. I don't know what else he expected from me," Alek said. This was more or less true. He had done what the smith had told him to do, but no more. Smithing was hot, boring work, and Alek couldn't force himself to enjoy it, or show interest.
"There is more to it than that. Old Pate wouldn't dismiss you for no reason. You pulled some stunt, or smarted off, I'd just bet! And you are going to be in deep trouble when your uncle gets back. He is going to be spun!"
Alek slapped the table with both hands, and stood so fast that the chair fell over behind him. "You and uncle Remi can both get tangled!" he yelled. The look of surprised pain on his mother's face sucked the anger right out of him. He looked back down at the table. His hands stung from the slap he had given it, and the door opened with a bang. Both of their heads jerked toward it in surprise. Instead of the angry uncle he had expected, Alek saw two large men in scale armor standing in the doorway.
The one on the left pointed at him and said, “You, come with us.” The other one walked toward him, and began to motion him to the doorway. His mother began to wail.
