Cole and Russell bound him with ropes, not knowing if my control over him would hold. Not a sound in the room; all eyes were on me and my prey. I probed his mind, looking for answers, but it was blank. Another clue without an answer. There was something there, but I couldn’t see it.
“Who is this man?” No one stepped forward, afraid if they spoke, they would be doomed by association. Daniel stepped forward, “Loran Starwell, my Queen.”
“And where is he from; his family, relatives?” All heads turned toward an old man leaning against the wall a few yards away.“What of it?” he said defiantly. I turned away from Loran. The crowd parted with my gaze. I touched his mind and recognized him as the one I had sensed; the “eighth man” who orchestrated the chaos here at my gala. I mouthed a few words. He stiffened and rose from the floor, levitating to the center of the Great Room. His eyes were almost bulging from their sockets. Before he could vocalize his terror, I snapped my fingers. He instantaneously ignited in white hot flames, intensely focused inward around his helpless flailing body, away from the others. The roaring conflagration continued for only a matter of seconds until his ashes fluttered silently to the floor. He was no more.
“Uncle,” came a small voice that sounded distant and foreign. A mumble from the lips of a deaf man. He looked around the room, shaking his head as if coming out of a trance. I touched his mind. He was clear now; I could read him. “Take him away, we will talk later.” If there had been any doubt about who I was ten minutes ago, there was none now.
“I am Angeline Marie La Mons, Queen of the Tails.”
