What inspired you to write your book?
I am an animal advocate and practitioner of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). Lucy came to us in a TNR operation in the Bahamas. Her real life story fascinated everyone who met her – so I decided to fictionalize and share it more widely.
About your Book:
Set on a tropical island where sumptuous mansions and lush foliage disguise deadly intentions, TAMING ME is the story of a struggling feral kitten. Wandering wtih her mother, foraging for enough food to stay alive, the hungry cat must also match wits against humans who want to kill all of her kind. Eventually confronted by a family of compassionate humans, another struggle begins, this one internal: whether to forego freedom for the confines and comforts of domesticity. Would she ever see her mother again? Will the murderous hermit succeed in wiping out the cat population? The newly named Lucy Miracle answers all these questions and more in the rags-to-riches suspense tale narrated by her.
Book Genre: Fiction
What formats are your books in
Both eBook and Print
How do you see writing a book in the Pet Genre as different from writing other genres of books?
TAMING ME falls into the “pet genre” because its narrator happens to be a cat. Therefore I had to learn to think like a cat, try to experience life through a cat’s with a cat’s sensibilities, and share the story as authentically as I could – as a cat! I think any fiction author must do this unless her/his narrator is an exact replica of his/her own persona and therefore requires little imagination or ability to express another point of view.
Advice to someone that is thinking about or currently working on a pet book
Research your market, know what books are out there and how to set yours apart. And just do it! Then come up with the best marketing plan you can.
I cannot stress strongly enough: research, research, research all aspects of the publishing business and what it takes to help a book succeed.
How did you decide how to publish your book and where is it published through:
I wanted a conventional publisher for my first book and was fortunate to be directed to a small house via a connection with a national animal welfare organization. TAMING ME is published by Collage Books, Inc.
I think new authors should thoroughly explore all methods of pubishing before deciding which route they’d like to try. If you have the capability to put out a first rate book, market and manage it yourself, you can be just as successful as with conventional publishing – perhaps even more so. Many authors are proving that. Either way takes a lot of time and effort. So make sure that you REALLY want to invest both!
