What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
My wife and I experienced the craziest year in 2018. She was in a major car accident, had 2 miscarriages, she had a major surgery, I lost my business, I suffered from an addiction and we lost 2 close family members. The exercises I created in the book allowed me to get through these tough situations and find peace along the way. I wrote the book for me, but based on the feedback I have received this book has helped lots of people find peace in any situation. I hope by reading Shut The 5 Up you will obtain, maintain and sustain peace in your life!
Section 1: Find Your Piece of Peace
Chapter 1: Shut The 5 Up Discovery
“Why don’t you Shut The 5 Up?” I said to an airline passenger sitting beside me.
Very startled the gentleman responded, “Excuse me, son, what did you say?”
“I said you need to Shut The 5 Up!”
My name is Jimmy Sweitzer, and every day I tell people to Shut The 5 Up! I have experienced less stress, more peace, and more productivity in my life by learning how to follow this simple yet life-changing act. I can show you how to experience all these things and more by following an easy exercise that only takes 5 minutes per day!
This book was created to be a guide for your journey into finding more peace. The feedback from the community has been amazing, as people have found how the concepts in this book can help in all facets of life. Readers have told me this book has helped people make time, be more productive, set and achieve goals, become more focused, and reduce anger and anxiety. It also helped them make more money, overcome addiction, recover from loss, help others, and overall live a better life! This feedback has far exceeded my expectations, and I am honored to share this book with you.
Any advice given is solely my opinion. I am not a financial advisor, doctor, lawyer, spiritual guru, astronaut, or Nobel Peace Prize winner! I am just a guy who over the past few years has studied, learned, and created methods to find more peace in all areas of my life. Now with the legalese out of the way…what is the best way to get the most out of this book?
Great question! The first two sections form the foundation and are important to read first, just like you would a regular book. Sections 3 and 4 can be read in any order, as one chapter is not more important than any other. These chapters build off each other, and yet each can stand alone depending on where you are in life and what you need. The final section is meant to be read last and is a fun story about how all the concepts in the book come together.
Section 1: Find Your Piece of Peace will show you how I discovered this awesome tool and how to implement it yourself. Section 2: Piece Your Peace Into Peacefulness will show you tips and tricks of how to take what you learned in Section 1 and take it to the next level. Section 3: When Your Peace Is In Pieces will show you how to find peace when things are not going well in your life. Section 4: The Ultimate Peace will show you how no matter who you are or what stage you are in life, you too can experience peace all day every day. Section 5: Peace Out will wrap up with the story mentioned above and next steps to stay connected with our amazing Shut The 5 Up (ST5U for short) community.
At the end of each chapter there is a Take 5 section. The Take 5 is five questions that should be answered in five minutes or less. I would encourage you to not skip these questions. They are thought-provoking and will help you get the most out of your study. Remember, you only get out what you put in, and these questions are an important step to maximizing your time. I also recommend having a notebook and pen handy to take notes on things that really stick out to you. I want you to highlight, underline, and earmark pages you need the most. You will want to reference this book in the future. I hope you find so much value in it that it will remain on your bookshelf for a long time.
Before I get into the what, why, or how…I need to tell you where I was when this concept first came to me. Don’t worry, we will get back to the airline passenger later in this chapter. Trust me, you are going to love this!
Let me take you back to the spring of 2011. Do you remember what you were doing then? Well, I was part of a men’s Bible study group. Now before you stop reading, understand this book is only designed to tell my story and how I discovered this amazing secret. And you know what? It is the only story I know how to tell! So, keep reading. You will not be disappointed!
Anyway, I was part of a men’s Bible study group that met once a week. The group was an awesome place to connect, learn, and fellowship with other men. Our leader Rich always prepared new and fun things for the group to discuss and do. He encouraged us to find our own ministry in whatever we did, do things at a level the world was unfamiliar with, and give God all the glory. Our group consisted primarily of single men in their 20s and 30s. We were also very blessed with a handful of guys who were married. These guys were awesome, because they had far more life experience and wisdom. There were probably about 30 active members of the group with about 20 in attendance each week. This week was no exception, and we had a solid group of men excited to hear what Rich had prepared. While what happened next changed my life, I did not realize this fact until years later. Far too many years later!
He quoted from Psalm 46:1 in the Bible: “Be still and know that I am God…” Rich asked us to think about this verse and what it meant to us. We took a few seconds to really let the verse sink in. “Be still and know that I am God…”
Now what he asked us to do next seemed crazy, especially given the fact it was 2011.
“Take your phones out of your pockets. Turn off your cell phones completely, not on silent or in airplane mode,” Rich said.
Dismayed, but interested by his insistent request, I took my phone out of my pocket and immediately turned it off. Apparently, silence was super important for the next activity.
“I want you to close your eyes and think of nothing for five minutes,” Rich explained.
What? I thought this was stupid and made no sense. How can I think of nothing for any longer than two seconds? We all had a deep respect for our leader, and I think we were all excited to see if we were up to the task! We all closed our eyes like Rich asked and waited for further instructions.
“I am going to set a timer for exactly five minutes. This is a time to be in silence, so please do not talk, move, or think before the timer goes off.”
Now I am not so good at the not talking part. I am pretty good at not moving, but how the heck am I supposed to not think? Think about it right now…how are you supposed to not think for five whole minutes? Well, if you just thought about not thinking, you are indeed thinking, right? Yes, yes you are!
Let me paint the scene for you…imagine about 20 guys sitting around a circle in a small 2-bedroom apartment living room. Every guy has his eyes closed trying to think about nothing. I thought for a second there we would break out a peace pipe or start singing kumbaya. Admittedly I was out of my comfort zone.
Before we started, Rich instructed us when a thought of any kind would enter our minds, we were to dismiss it completely (even if it was a good thought) and go back to thinking of nothing. If the whole time I am visualizing nothing, aren’t I thinking about something?
It was so hard for me to even get close to what Rich asked us to do. I thought about my to-do list, where we would go to eat after group, why we were doing this exercise in the first place, what my girlfriend was doing that night, what made my chair so soft, and when the 5 minutes will be up…all within the first 3 seconds of “Not Thinking!”
At the end we talked about the experience and reflected on our quiet “no thinking” time. Honestly, there was not a single guy in the group that was able to think about nothing! We had failed. It was an impossible task, we all agreed…or was it?
Well, honestly, the first time you try it you may fail, but rest assured with a little practice this simple act can seriously change your life. That is exactly what this book is all about.
Fast forward to the summer of 2017…I had all but forgotten about this awesome trick. You know the feeling when you do something cool at the time (or in our case a little weird), but totally forget about it literally hours later? This happens to me all the time. That is why…spoiler alert…we have a 30-day challenge toward the end of the book, so you can see how powerful it can be to Shut The 5 Up every day for 30 days!
Remember the guy on the plane? Well I am on a flight back from Philadelphia and end up sitting next to a guy named Chris. We talk about business, family, and life. He was coming back from a business trip but seemed to have a lot on his mind. Chris asked me what I did for work. At the time I owned an event company called MOST EPIC Events. We hosted various public events and were best known for our EPIC MUD MAZE. Side note: The EPIC MUD MAZE was a huge 2.5-acre maze full of mud and obstacles!
I told him I was gearing up for our next event in just a few months. He was interested in the event and asked how I had come up with such a cool idea. I looked him right in the eyes and said, “Shut The 5 Up!”
Can you imagine his reaction? What would you have done in that situation? Would security have to pull you off me? Well to be completely honest, I didn’t have that cool book title at the time, but I did share with him my experience with being in silence for five minutes per day.
Taken a little aback, which is the reaction I get almost 100% of the time, he looked at me, super puzzled as to what I had just said. He was very curious about the five-minute practice and really loved what I had to say. He wanted to learn more and was genuinely interested in what he would describe as an “odd practice.” He kept asking questions like: Do you think this will work for me? How can you sit still for so long? When do you have the time to do this? I answered all his questions as best as I could but thought I did not come close to answering a single one. Just as he was taken aback by the “thing” I told him to do, I was taken aback at why he wanted to know so much about it. I realized that if Chris was so interested in this, maybe it can work for others!
Chris assured me he would give it a try for 10 days and let me know how it went. I also committed to doing it 10 days in a row, so we could keep each other accountable. I thought to myself, how many times has someone told me they would do something only to never hear from them again? Especially someone I just met on a plane. We exchanged numbers, disembarked, and went our separate ways.
Now I know what you are thinking…at this point in my life I must have been using this tool every day since 2011. I would tell people about it wherever I went, and it had impacted me so much. Now I have superpowers and can save the planet…just kidding! After all, I just told a complete stranger he needed to do this for ten days in a row. Truth be told, I had only Shut The 5 Up a few times in those long six years. It stayed with me because every time I did sit in silence for five minutes, I always, and I mean always, had gotten something out of it. I guess it is kind of like working out. If I push myself to get to the gym or go on a run, even if I am tired and sore after, it feels good to have completed and accomplished something. So, Shutting The 5 Up was rarely on my mind and definitely not something I did every day, but when I did, it was worthwhile and meaningful.
10 days passed and sure enough, Chris texted me the following message: “Your five-minute suggestion has been working wonders for me! So, thank you for that. I feel like I am able to slow my mind down enough to receive His word. I have been spreading the trick around Church!” I was honestly shocked, especially because I had not held up my end of the bargain. I got to three days and forgot about going the full ten! Once I received his text I dove back in and went ten days in a row. I thought this would only be something that truly worked for me, and not others, but that was and is still not the case! Following that ten days, I had the most amazing week! I found a level of peace and relaxation that I had never experienced in my life. If it were not for Chris, I would have never Shut The 5 Up for any longer than one day, and I certainly would not have written this book! There is such power in doing this consistently over time. So, what are you waiting for? Just as I wish I told Chris I will tell you now: You need to Shut The 5 Up!
1. On a scale from 1-5 (1 being complete chaos and 5 being complete peace) where would you say your life right now would rank? Be honest!
2. If not a 5, what do you need to change in your life to get there?
