What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
A few years back, I joined the Sherlock Holmes Society of Canada–also known as the Toronto Bootmakers. In May of 2014 this esteemed group of scholars announced a contest for the writing of a new Sherlock Holmes mystery. Although I had never tried his hand at fiction before, I entered and was pleasantly surprised to be selected as one of the winners. Having enjoyed the experience I decided to write more of the same, and am now on a mission to write a new Sherlock Holmes mystery that is related to and inspired by each of the sixty stories in the original Canon.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are two of the most famous and beloved characters in all of western literature. Having chosen to write New Sherlock Holmes Mysteries, I did not have to come up with new main characters; I only had to place the two of them in different situations, facing new challenges, and with new puzzles to solve. The secondary characters in the book came from my furtive imagination, having met fascinating people in over 100 countries during the past half-century.
“DANCERS,” OBSERVED SHERLOCK HOLMES one late November afternoon, “are just like all other artists. Only … more so. Unlike the rest of us who merely strut and fret our hour upon the stage, these young men and women display spectacular beauty, form, and athleticism as they gracefully leap and pirouette across the stages of the West End. They are artists of the highest degree, utterly, intensely devoted to and passionate about their art. Their burning passion possesses them not only on the stage but also in every aspect of their bodies and souls. It can be observed in their walk, their speech, their dress, their love lives, their friendships and animosities, and their politics.
“Unfortunately,” he continued after lighting his beloved pipe, “it can also be seen in the way, from time to time, they murder each other.”
