What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I wanted to write a 'realistic' young adult novel involving vampires (if there can ever be any).
Originally, a 'vampire' was someone so strongly attracted to life and power over other people that they wouldn't leave this earth. In the past, it was thought that such individuals could come back to haunt others.
On this basis, I tried to use vampires and what they symbolise as a metaphor for darkness that can be found all around us, among others in the human mind.
As mentioned elsewhere, such darkness, especially when connected to power over other people, can be strangely alluring.
I wanted to explore how we can face it, be tempted by it and how one might try to deal with it in everyday life, in the current global circumstances.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The main character is young adult and a woman (Lana), because I can write most genuinely from a woman's perspective. The other characters followed in line with the requirements of the story I wanted to tell, of oscillating between 'good' and 'evil' (and the many shades in between).
The other two central characters are therefore a young man and a vampire vying for Lana's attention.
Another important character is the head of the company where Lana gets her first job (who is a vampire).
Finally, there is Lana's sidekick and her best friend, Danielle (Dani).
The light on the morning of the day she would begin her job was feeble, as if it had been raining outside. Her room felt cold and clammy. She sat up in her bed, a little annoyed at the fact that she didn’t remember having any dreams. Instead, her sleep was dreamless and heavy, as if a black curtain was hanging over her. Perhaps it was because of the rain that she now heard through the closed shades, which sounded like an annoying little September drizzle. She looked at her bedside watch but it wasn’t yet seven in the morning, the time of the alarm she had set the night before. Her head was beginning to hurt. She was in no mood to do anything.
She dragged herself out of her bedroom and to the bathroom regardless. It cheered her up a little that she saw Dani was up and bustling in the little kitchen already, apparently making tea. Fresh out of the bathroom, Lana joined her friend in the kitchen, and they both sat down by the window, Dani reading news on the phone and Lana sipping hot tea with honey from a cup that she held with both hands. Lana saw the morning was indeed unpleasantly cloudy and rainy when she looked outside.
“Isn’t today your first day at the Hart Foundation?” intoned Dani.
“Yes,” said Lana, turning back to her friend.
“There’s an article in the daily news under fun facts section about archaeological excavations that took place some time ago in the city centre, and I think I saw the Hart Foundation being mentioned…”
“Really? What does it say?”
“Wait… I have to find it again,” Dani scrolled down her phone. “Ah, here it is. It says there were some huge excavations like decades ago right in the area where the Hart Foundation building is located.”
“What did they find?”
“Before I tell you, you have to promise me you won’t freak out.”
Lana rolled her eyes. “Sure, I promise.”
“It says they found more than two hundred graves from over centuries ago… looks like there was some kind of a cemetery there back then.”
Lana could feel the hairs on the back of her arms stand up and prickle. “But those graves aren’t there any more I guess?”
“Sorry, it says here that as a conservation measure the archaeologists let them where they were, with the buildings on top of them.”
“Gee, I sure appreciate you telling me this the very day I’m supposed to start working there. Now I’ll have to be on the lookout for demonic things crawling out of their coffins…” Lana rolled her eyes again, and they shared a giggle.
