Savannah’s Secret: The Marie Bartek & SIP Team Series, Book 5 is a paranormal investigation novel written by Robin Murphy. Marie and her new husband, Cory, had just returned from their honeymoon in France, and were wondering how they’d adapt to being back at home again, when they heard about a supposed vampire attack in Savannah, Georgia. Thirteen-year-old Elizabeth Tanner had been woken in the middle of the night by a squealing sound. She quickly dressed and ran out to the barn where the family’s pigs had their stall. The young girl heard a lapping sound and was stunned to see a shape looming over one of their pigs. When she inadvertently made a noise, the figure turned and faced her. She was mesmerized by its golden eyes and watched as it swiftly scaled the walls of the barn and escaped through the loft. One of the family’s pigs had indeed been slaughtered. Marie’s psychic team was not entirely convinced that the report was for real, but Marie and Cory believed the Tanner family needed their assistance in dealing with this strange and frightening occurrence.
Savannah’s Secret takes the team to the historic city of Savannah, and the characters they encounter while researching the Tanner family’s vampire claim are unforgettable. While this is the fifth book in the series, Murphy provides more than sufficient background data to allow readers to enjoy this book as a standalone. I had a marvelous time reading about Savannah’s rich and dark history and was especially intrigued by the literary themes that pervade this story about vampires, time travel and the culture of this historic city. Murphy’s story is well-plotted, fast-paced and exciting. Savannah’s Secret: The Marie Bartek & SIP Team Series, Book 5 is most highly recommended.
Targeted Age Group:: 13-adult
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Being the 5th book in my series, I've always wanted to write about vampires. Traveling to Savannah, GA started the creative side of my brain to pull in the ambience of the stories being told about a vampire community in the heart of Savannah.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The characters are the same group from my series, but I read the book, Carmilla, the first female vampire in gothic literature, one of the works that inspired Bram Stoker, which helped me create the vampires and the idea of time travel.
The moon’s glow illuminated the bedroom as his mouth lingered at the nape of her creamy neck. He took in the scent of her blood as the beat of her heart hammered in his ears. She was a beautiful woman at the tender age of twenty-three, and she anxiously waited for his tender kiss. He had baited her for months until she finally gave him permission for his seduction. She was an easy donor with many insecurities, which he carefully distinguished one-by-one, telling her she had no reason to fear him or anyone else who relished in her beauty.
He lifted her mesmerized listless body further up the pillow as he whispered in Romanian into her ear. “Lasă-mă hrănesc cu sânge și vă voi da viața veșnică.”
She replied in a frenzy of lust and impatience, “Yes, give me eternal life. Take my blood and make me a part of you.”
His grin faded, and he quickly bit into her neck as her body quivered in pain and then fell silent and lifeless beneath him. He continued to feed hungrily as the vessels in his body began to dance in an ecstatic heated rapture. He sated his hunger and slowly finished draining the last bit of blood as he licked the wound and then kissed her forehead.
He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and whispered one last time in her ear. “Rest my child, and I will visit again when both our desires need to be met.”
He carefully shifted her body on the bed and swiftly descended the stairs and made his way outside into the waiting black sedan. He met the driver’s eyes staring back at him from the rearview mirror and nodded. The car sped off as he dropped his head back on the seat and thought, yes, he will sleep well tonight, as his lips formed a small smile and a low chuckle rose from his throat.
